Dr. Matthew Meyer, professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, will present “AI and Our Humanity” on February 5 as part of the Thursdays at the U series at UW-Eau Claire – Barron County. The talk will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall of Ritzinger Hall and will also be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
Meyer will explore how artificial intelligence, both in its current form and future possibilities, fascinates the human imagination. He will discuss the dual aspects of AI: the potential dangers of advanced systems leading to human extinction, contrasted with the hope that AI might help resolve major global issues such as war, famine, and climate change.
After reviewing these contrasting scenarios, Meyer will address a thought-provoking question: even if AI development proceeds optimally, are we sacrificing something invaluable? He will contemplate the implications for meaning and purpose in a world where significant problems are “solved.”
Meyer’s philosophical interests encompass a range of topics, including existentialism, happiness studies, pop culture, and environmental ethics. His recent focus has shifted toward the philosophy and ethics of artificial intelligence, having taught an honors seminar on the subject and offering the first official Philosophy of AI course this semester at UW-Eau Claire.
The Thursdays at the U series is free and open to the public, supported by the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Attendees do not need to make seating reservations or obtain parking permits.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, most presentations in the series are livestreamed and archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage, allowing wider access to these discussions.
The next program in the series will take place on February 12, featuring award-winning writer Nickolas Butler, who will present “Writing From Home: Finding Inspiration in Small Town Wisconsin.”
