Mistral AI and Swedish data center developer EcoDataCenter have forged a strategic, long-term partnership to construct an AI-focused data center at EcoDataCenter’s Borlänge site. This initiative represents a significant investment of €1.2 billion aimed at bolstering Europe’s digital infrastructure and enhancing localized AI capabilities. The facility, scheduled to open in 2027, marks Mistral’s inaugural AI infrastructure venture outside France.
The partnership aims to deliver a “fully European AI stack,” integrating Mistral’s foundation models with EcoDataCenter’s high-density, sustainable data center infrastructure. Data will be processed and stored locally in Europe, reflecting a commitment to technological sovereignty. EcoDataCenter plans to design, build, and operate the facility in Sweden, leveraging renewable energy and advanced cooling technologies, as well as its expertise in developing high-density AI data centers. The Borlänge site is specifically designed to accommodate demanding AI workloads and is scalable for future growth.
The data center will be equipped with NVIDIA’s latest-generation Vera Rubin GPUs, significantly enhancing compute capacity in Sweden. The companies positioned this investment as part of broader efforts to strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy in AI, aiming to bolster competitiveness and resilience within the digital economy.
Arthur Mensch, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Mistral AI, emphasized the significance of this investment. He stated, “This investment is a concrete step toward building independent capabilities in Europe, dedicated to AI. By delivering a fully vertical offer with locally processed and stored data, we are reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness. This lays the foundation for a European AI cloud that can serve industries, public institutions, and researchers at scale.”
