Government Partners with HD Hyundai to Boost AI in Shipbuilding Sector

South Korea’s government partners with HD Hyundai and top universities to develop AI solutions for shipbuilding, aiming to enhance global competitiveness and innovation.

In a significant move to bolster the competitiveness of South Korea’s shipbuilding and marine industries, the government has announced a collaboration with key industry players, including HD Hyundai and several academic institutions. This partnership aims to harness artificial intelligence (AI) technologies specifically tailored for these sectors. The announcement was made during a meeting on October 20, 2023, between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyounghun and HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center.

The collaboration includes the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, along with five key organizations: the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Robotics, and Ulsan University. The partnership is viewed as critical for the global competitiveness of South Korea’s shipbuilding and marine sectors, which currently face numerous challenges and opportunities.

The officials emphasized the necessity for an AI transition within the shipbuilding industry. According to a representative from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the initiative aims to “take a leap forward by applying AI to the Korean shipbuilding and maritime industries with international competitiveness.” By leveraging the collective expertise from industry and academia, the goal is to expedite the adoption of AI technologies.

Developing AI Foundations for Industry

In the roadmap forward, the organizations involved plan to collaboratively develop AI foundation models that are specifically tailored for shipbuilding and maritime applications. This will include establishing an industrial data ecosystem, nurturing professional talent, and promoting regional industrial ecosystems.
