India Surges to Third in Global AI Vibrancy Index, Outpacing UK and Germany

India ranks third in the global AI landscape with a score of 21.59, surpassing the UK and Germany, while bolstering its R&D and talent pool.

India has emerged as a significant player in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, ranking third in the latest report by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). The report, authored by Hung Tran, a senior fellow at the Policy Centre for the New South, evaluates countries based on a weighted index score that considers factors such as research and development (R&D), responsible AI practices, economic impact, talent pool, policy and governance, public opinion, and infrastructure.

With a total weighted index score of 21.59, India trails behind China, which scores 36.95, and the United States, leading with a score of 78.6. However, India surpasses other nations like the United Kingdom, Germany, and Israel. The country has particularly excelled in AI R&D and is recognized for its talent, coming in second after Singapore.

The report highlights India’s ability to leverage its strengths in the IT services sector, where major corporate players have actively supported R&D initiatives and established data centers to encourage the use of indigenous data. A key focus of India’s strategy has been on securing its sovereignty across the AI supply chain, encompassing R&D, design, software and hardware development, and data management.

India’s commitment to fostering an open and interoperable environment for AI is further underscored by its promotion of robust domestic datasets, essential for specific applications and regulatory compliance. For instance, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched AIKosha last year, a national repository of curated datasets and foundational models designed for the use of start-ups and researchers.

The report asserts, “In short, India is an example of a balanced approach in protecting data privacy and regulating cross-border transfers while developing interoperable and comprehensive domestic datasets, supporting AI-powered applications in various areas.” This nuanced strategy may serve as a model for other countries aiming to nurture AI ecosystems while safeguarding user privacy and data integrity.

As India continues to build on its strong foundation in AI, the significance of its position in the global landscape may influence international collaborations and investments in emerging technologies. With a growing emphasis on responsible AI and a commitment to fostering talent, India is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of the industry.
