Nancy Cartwright, Bart Simpson’s Voice, Opposes AI Replacement, Citing Lack of Heart

Nancy Cartwright, voice of Bart Simpson, argues against AI replacement, emphasizing its lack of emotional depth after 800 episodes of The Simpsons

After 800 episodes, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson on the iconic animated series The Simpsons, expressed skepticism about the potential of artificial intelligence to replace her role. Cartwright, who has voiced the character since the show’s inception in 1989, recently shared her thoughts on AI and its limitations.

In an interview with People, she articulated her desire for a human successor rather than an AI replacement. “I think I would choose a successor [instead of AI], and I’ll tell you why — because AI has no heart and I think that’s a missing ingredient,” she stated, emphasizing the emotional depth that human performers bring to their roles.

Cartwright elaborated on her belief that, while AI might replicate her vocal patterns, it cannot capture the passion that she believes is essential to her craft. “We’re spiritual beings, we can emote passion and uplift people and stuff. And I don’t know that a computer can do something like that,” she added.

As the entertainment industry grapples with the implications of AI, Disney, the parent company of Fox, has been actively navigating this landscape. Following a $1 billion deal with OpenAI for the generative AI app Sora, the company has intensified its legal efforts against entities misusing its intellectual property, particularly regarding unauthorized AI renditions of its extensive collection of characters.

Created by Matt Groening in 1987 as part of a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, The Simpsons has become a cultural staple, currently airing its 37th season. The much-anticipated 800th episode, titled “Irrational Treasure,” is set to premiere on Sunday at 8 PM ET/PT.

In addition to celebrating this milestone, Disney+ has recently launched a dedicated channel for the show, further solidifying its status in the streaming landscape. The series is also preparing for a new movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.

As discussions around AI’s role in creative industries continue, Cartwright’s comments highlight a broader conversation about the irreplaceable human elements in storytelling and performance. With technology rapidly advancing, the question remains: can AI truly capture the essence of what it means to be an artist?
