Alibaba Launches Qwen-3.5 Open-Source AI Model with 397 Billion Parameters and Native Multimodality

Alibaba launches Qwen-3.5 open-source AI model with 397 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window, driving 60% lower operational costs.

The cloud division of Chinese tech giant Alibaba has unveiled its latest open-source AI model, Qwen-3.5, which was reported by the South China Morning Post. This announcement coincided with the Lunar New Year, marking a strategic timing for the launch as businesses and developers gear up for new projects in the coming year.

Qwen-3.5 is positioned as a leading solution in the realm of large language models (LLMs), boasting a remarkable context window of 1 million tokens—one of the largest in the industry. The model, which features an impressive 397 billion parameters, is accompanied by a variant named Qwen-3.5-Open-Source, offering a context window of 256,000 tokens.

In a significant advancement, Qwen-3.5 has achieved native multimodality, allowing it to process and understand text, images, audio, and video within a single cohesive framework. This capability is expected to enhance the user experience across various applications, from content creation to data analysis.

Alibaba’s new architecture for Qwen-3.5 has been designed to improve computational efficiency while significantly reducing operational costs. The company claims that Qwen 3.5 is now 60% cheaper to use compared to its predecessor and is capable of handling large workloads up to eight times more effectively. Additionally, it possesses the ability to autonomously execute tasks in both mobile and desktop applications, a feature that could revolutionize how developers integrate AI into their workflows.

“Created for the era of agentic AI, Qwen 3.5 helps developers and companies move faster and achieve more with the same computational resources, setting a new standard of efficiency per unit cost of inference,” the company stated.

Since its inception, Qwen has gained traction among developers and enterprises due to its multiple versions tailored to various tasks. The model has been hailed as the “standard open model,” and its popularity is underscored by its performance on platforms like Hugging Face, where downloads surpassed the combined total of other major open solutions in December.

Earlier this month, Qwen-3 made headlines as the world’s first AI model to be downloaded and operated in orbit, further solidifying its reputation as an innovative force in the AI landscape.

As the AI industry continues to evolve, Qwen-3.5 represents a significant step forward in making advanced AI capabilities more accessible and cost-effective for developers and enterprises. The implications of this development could extend beyond immediate applications, influencing how companies approach AI integration in their operational strategies and product offerings.
