OpenAI has alerted U.S. lawmakers regarding the actions of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, as detailed in a memo obtained by Reuters. The memo reveals that the organization, led by Sam Altman, suspects DeepSeek of attempting to replicate American AI models for its own purposes. This practice, known as distillation, involves using older AI models to evaluate and enhance the performance of newer models, effectively transferring knowledge from one to another. Despite requests for comment, neither DeepSeek nor its parent company, High-Flyer, responded to inquiries from the media.

In a separate development, the Russian government has officially blocked access to WhatsApp, with the Kremlin accusing the Meta-owned messaging service of failing to comply with local laws. In response, Russian authorities have suggested that citizens switch to a state-supported alternative known as MAX. Critics, however, contend that MAX serves as a tool for surveillance, a claim the Russian government denies.

Meanwhile, a significant regulatory shift may be on the horizon in the United Kingdom, as the government considers banning social media access for children under the age of 16. The proposed legislation aims to close loopholes that currently exempt some AI chatbots from existing safety regulations. This move is part of broader initiatives to address emerging digital risks, a trend echoed by several European nations including Spain, Greece, and Slovenia, all of which are contemplating similar bans. Australia has already set a precedent as the first country to implement such restrictions on minors.

The European space sector achieved a milestone with the launch of the new Ariane 64 heavy-lift rocket, which successfully deployed 32 Amazon Leo satellites into low Earth orbit. This launch marked the debut of the most powerful version of the Ariane 6 rocket, developed collaboratively by Airbus and Safran under the Arianespace banner. The Amazon Leo network aims to provide internet services in regions where terrestrial connectivity is insufficient, positioning it as a competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink.

In the semiconductor industry, Samsung has announced the commencement of shipments of its advanced HBM4 chips to unnamed customers. This strategic move aims to close the gap with competitors supplying critical components for Nvidia AI accelerators. The surge in demand for AI data centers has significantly increased the need for these semiconductors, which are essential for processing vast amounts of data required for training and operating AI models.
