Jharkhand unveils four Centres of Excellence in AI and emerging technologies at BIT Sindri and GEC Palamu to enhance employability and align education with industry needs.

Ranchi: The government of Jharkhand is set to enhance its technical education landscape by establishing several Centres of Excellence (CoE) focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. The proposal, announced by the state’s Department of Higher and Technical Education, includes the establishment of these centres at BIT Sindri and the Government Engineering College (GEC) in Palamu. Principal Secretary Rahul Purwar emphasized that the initiative aims to boost employability and improve placement outcomes by aligning educational offerings with industry needs.

The four proposed CoEs at BIT Sindri will target key future-oriented domains. The first CoE will delve into Extended, Augmented, Virtual, and Mixed Reality (XR/AR/VR/MR) technologies, featuring both a basic XR training lab and an advanced XR research lab. The second CoE will focus on Drone and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), equipped with a drone simulation lab, a design and R&D lab, and a GIS, AI, and data processing lab.

The third CoE at BIT Sindri will concentrate on electric vehicles, including a lab for electric powertrain and driveline systems, a battery technology lab, and an AR/VR-based EV maintenance and safety training lab. The fourth will encompass data analytics, covering artificial intelligence and machine learning, featuring a big data analytics lab along with facilities for natural language processing and computer vision.

At the Government Engineering College in Palamu, four additional CoEs are proposed, focusing on civil construction and town planning, sustainable and renewable energy technology, data analytics with AI and machine learning, and robotics and automation. Purwar noted that the introduction of these centres would significantly enhance academic and research capabilities in the state.

Furthermore, the proposed CoEs aim to create structured opportunities for summer internships and long-term training programs for students of polytechnic colleges across Jharkhand. This hands-on approach will provide practical exposure to modern equipment and emerging technologies, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical learning and industry requirements.

As the technological landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like these underscore the importance of equipping students with relevant skills that meet the demands of the future workforce. The integration of AI and emerging technologies into the educational framework not only prepares students for new job opportunities but also positions Jharkhand as a proactive player in the national drive toward technological advancement.

With the establishment of these Centres of Excellence, Jharkhand is taking a significant step in strengthening its technical education sector, fostering innovation, and ensuring that its workforce is well-prepared for the challenges of a rapidly changing job market. As the initiative progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on both student outcomes and local industry growth.

At AIPressa, my work focuses on discovering how artificial intelligence is transforming the way we learn and teach. I've covered everything from adaptive learning platforms to the debate over ethical AI use in classrooms and universities. My approach: balancing enthusiasm for educational innovation with legitimate concerns about equity and access. When I'm not writing about EdTech, I'm probably exploring new AI tools for educators or reflecting on how technology can truly democratize knowledge without leaving anyone behind.
