A recent study from Google DeepMind raises questions about the ethical reasoning of AI chatbots, suggesting that while their responses may sound moral, they may lack true understanding of morality. Current assessments of AI’s moral capacity focus on “moral performance,” which measures whether an AI model generates acceptable answers. However, researchers at DeepMind contend this method overlooks a crucial issue: can AI truly engage in ethical reasoning, or is it merely echoing learned phrases?
In a paper published in Nature, the team outlines a framework for evaluating “moral competence,” defined as the ability to generate morally appropriate responses based on relevant ethical considerations. As stated in the abstract, this evaluation is “critical for predicting future model behavior, establishing appropriate public trust and justifying moral attributions.”
Among Google’s ongoing AI initiatives are the Gemini language models, Gemini Image for visual creation and editing, Lyria for music generation, Gemini Audio for real-time audio, and Veo for video production. Researchers have identified three significant challenges in assessing moral reasoning in AI.
The first is the facsimile problem, where large language models (LLMs) mimic moral reasoning without genuine comprehension. The second challenge, moral multidimensionality, acknowledges that real-world decisions often involve complex, context-sensitive factors that extend beyond a binary understanding of right and wrong. Lastly, moral pluralism highlights the necessity for AI to consider diverse ethical norms that vary across cultures and domains.
To address these concerns, DeepMind proposes using adversarial testing in unusual or high-stakes scenarios to evaluate AI’s ethical reasoning capabilities. They also suggest assessing whether AI can navigate various ethical frameworks and respond consistently to subtle contextual changes. The researchers assert that “progress is possible” despite the limitations of current models, emphasizing the importance of rigorous evaluations as AI increasingly takes on roles in critical areas such as medical advice and therapy.
“Right now, when you ask AI for moral guidance, it’s predicting words, not reasoning ethically,” the study asserts. “Our roadmap points to a future where AI could be assessed for genuine moral understanding.”
As AI chatbots gain traction, their influence on human behavior raises ethical concerns. A recent feature in the New York Times detailed instances where individuals experienced psychosis, delusions, or harmful behaviors following interactions with AI. Therapists reported instances where chatbots validated harmful beliefs, exacerbating feelings of isolation and, in some cases, contributing to suicidal ideation or violent actions.
