OpenAI has disclosed that it flagged and subsequently banned an account belonging to 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar approximately six months prior to the shooting. However, the company stated it did not inform law enforcement at that time, as the account’s activity did not meet its internal threshold for referral, which requires evidence of “imminent and credible risk” of serious physical harm. This lack of notification has triggered frustration and anger among provincial and federal officials, including British Columbia Premier David Eby, who suggested that earlier intervention might have averted the tragedy.
OpenAI asserted that Van Rootselaar’s account was identified through a combination of automated tools and human reviews focused on detecting misuse of its models in violent contexts. Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon has stated that the commitments made by OpenAI do not suffice and that he will consult with the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, to discuss stronger safety protocols.
