Perplexity has announced the launch of the mobile version of its AI-powered browser, Comet, making it accessible on Android devices. The co-founder, President, and CEO of Perplexity, Aravind Srinivas, shared this update in a LinkedIn post on November 20. He noted that the mobile experience significantly simplifies research and enhances user interaction through voice commands.
In addition to the Android version, an iOS version is expected to be released shortly. Comet was initially available solely for Mac and Windows platforms. With this mobile launch, Perplexity aims to redefine how users engage with web browsers, moving away from conventional desktop experiences.
In a blog post, Perplexity highlighted Comet as “the world’s first truly AI-native browser,” already utilized by millions of users. The company emphasized its commitment to tailoring the browser experience for different operating systems and device formats. “We didn’t want to just force a desktop experience onto mobile,” Perplexity stated. Instead, they have reimagined the mobile web browser for the evolving landscape of the internet.
Comet offers a range of features catered to enhance user experience. These include a personal AI assistant capable of answering questions and executing tasks, a voice mode for interactive chats, a summary feature that aggregates information from all open tabs, and an ad blocker that curbs spam and pop-up ads. According to Perplexity, “Comet is a powerful and private personal assistant.” Users can leverage it for research, summarization, shopping, and learning—duplicating their own personal “superpowers.”
The launch of Comet for mobile comes after its debut as a desktop-only version in July, which was initially exclusive to Perplexity Max subscribers. By October, the company made the browser available for free to the general public, with promises of a mobile app following soon after. This strategic move reflects Perplexity’s rapid growth trajectory, bolstered by a recent funding round that secured $200 million, bringing its valuation to $20 billion. Over the previous year, Perplexity had consistently raised funds approximately every two months, accumulating over $1 billion in total financing.
The introduction of Comet marks a significant development in the browser landscape, especially as users increasingly demand more integrated and AI-driven experiences. As AI technologies continue to evolve, tools like Comet offer a glimpse into the future of web interaction, where voice commands and personalized assistance can streamline online tasks.
For those in the AI community, this launch is a pivotal moment, showcasing how browser technology is adapting to meet the needs of modern users. With Comet, Perplexity is not just entering the mobile market but is actively reshaping it, making research and online activities more intuitive and accessible.
