U.S. Army Seeks AI-Powered Tech to Counter Uncrewed Threats by March 2031

U.S. Army seeks innovative AI solutions by March 2031 to counter uncrewed threats and enhance soldier protection in evolving military tactics.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. – U.S. Army researchers are seeking innovative technologies aimed at countering uncrewed systems and swarming tactics to enhance the protection of soldiers and equipment in both ground and aerial operations. Last week, officials from the Armaments Center of the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) at Picatinny Arsenal issued a broad agency announcement (W15QKN-26-S-1AZR) for the DEVCOM AC Emerging Technologies project.

The request primarily focuses on the ability to detect, classify, track, and neutralize enemy uncrewed aircraft, ground vehicles, surface ships, and submarines, whether deployed individually or as swarms. The Army aims to leverage cutting-edge capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to achieve these objectives over significant distances.

In addition to the engagement capabilities, researchers are particularly interested in developing counter-uncrewed technology that integrates AI and machine learning, emphasizing machine autonomy. The Army’s focus includes a variety of effectors and kinetic defeat mechanisms, as well as remotely operated and autonomous weapons, swarming uncrewed systems, munitions tailored for uncrewed aircraft, precision sensing technologies, and effective command-and-control network integration.

Companies interested in contributing to this initiative are encouraged to submit white papers by March 4, 2031. Those whose proposals demonstrate potential may be invited to develop full submissions. Queries regarding the administrative aspects of the submission process should be directed to Kelly Lynch at [email protected], while technical questions can be addressed to Jessica Gondela at [email protected]. More information about the project can be found at https://sam.gov/workspace/contract/opp/b75c77d156b14c84af07401ed51ec7f3/view.

This initiative reflects the Army’s broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in a rapidly evolving battlefield landscape. As uncrewed systems become increasingly prevalent in military operations globally, the need for effective countermeasures is more critical than ever. The integration of advanced technologies will not only bolster defense mechanisms but also redefine operational strategies, maintaining a technological edge over adversaries.

The Army’s call for innovative solutions comes at a time when the proliferation of these systems poses significant challenges to traditional military tactics. By harnessing technology that allows for enhanced situational awareness and swift response capabilities, the Army aims to ensure that its personnel and assets can operate safely and effectively in diverse combat environments.
