The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has launched a national AI skilling initiative in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), Google, and YouTube, targeting India’s creative sector. The program will provide 15,000 scholarships aimed at creators, media professionals, and digital talent across various domains, including animation, gaming, and content production. This initiative emerges at a critical juncture when AI tools are transforming the landscape of content creation and distribution, highlighting a significant gap in skilled usage despite increasing access to these technologies.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the program is designed to “strengthen AI capabilities” within creative industries such as animation, visual effects, gaming, and media technology. The initiative aims to build “future-ready skills” and bolster India’s status as a global content hub. Gunjan Soni of Google reiterated that the partnership is focused on making creators “fluent in the tools of tomorrow,” asserting that AI can enhance storytelling and broaden audience reach.
Shekar Khosla from Google stated that the overarching goal is to equip creative professionals with “specialised AI skills” and explore the practical application of these tools in real-world scenarios. Vishwas Deoskar, CEO of IICT, framed the initiative as a pivotal shift from mere awareness to actual capability, stressing the importance of practical, real-world application of AI across all stages of content creation, production, and distribution.
The program will unfold in two phases. The first phase will concentrate on foundational AI skills, granting all 15,000 participants access to Google Career Certificates and generative AI learning paths. The second phase will delve into specialisation, featuring hands-on training in storytelling, AI tools, and best practices tailored for YouTube, delivered through a hybrid model in key creative hubs. This approach aligns with India’s broader strategy to scale its digital economy and enhance its creative exports.
While India boasts a vast base of creators, the quality of monetisation and production remains inconsistent. Structured AI training has the potential to standardize output and elevate global competitiveness, particularly as platforms like YouTube increasingly reward high-quality, AI-assisted content. This initiative builds on the previous “Create with AI” program, signaling a serious commitment to integrating AI into the core workflows of content creation.
If executed effectively, the initiative could shift the discourse from experimenting with AI tools to cultivating a skilled workforce proficient in their application. The commitment to structured training could also play a crucial role in preparing India’s creative sector for the evolving demands of the digital economy, ultimately positioning the country as a leader in innovative content production.
As the landscape of content creation continues to evolve, the collaboration between governmental, educational, and tech sectors represents a concerted effort to harness the potential of AI in enhancing the capabilities of the creative workforce in India.
