Perplexity launches the free Comet browser for iOS, integrating its AI assistant to enhance browsing with real-time research and task automation.

Perplexity has announced the launch of the Comet browser for iOS, marking a significant step in making the company’s AI assistant, the Comet Assistant, accessible to iPhone users. This new version positions itself as an alternative to traditional web browsers by integrating advanced information processing capabilities directly into the browsing experience.

The application retains most features familiar to users of the desktop version, most notably the “Deep Research” tool. This feature can draw information from multiple sources across the web, generating focused summaries in real time. Additionally, the Comet browser offers a “hybrid search” that combines traditional search engine results with detailed answers provided by the assistant, along with a voice mode that allows users to query in natural language. However, Perplexity has noted that the iOS version launches without support for extensions, which are a central component of its desktop counterpart.

Beyond simple search functionality, the Comet Assistant on iPhone is designed to perform various active tasks for users, including comparing prices across shopping sites, locating products, and summarizing email correspondence. The new application allows for continuous synchronization between devices, enabling users to start a query or research on their computer and seamlessly continue on their iPhone from the exact point they left off.

This launch represents a strategic shift for Perplexity. Initially, when the service was launched last year, it commanded a subscription price of $200 per month. The new browser is now available for free download, with the company offering subscription plans, labeled Pro and Max, starting at $20 per month. The revenue model for the free version is based on collecting users’ browsing and search history to build targeted advertising profiles.

The introduction of the Comet browser comes at a time of increasing competition in the web browser market, where the integration of AI technologies is becoming a focal point. Major players are increasingly incorporating AI to enhance user experience, and Perplexity’s move may attract a user base looking for more than just a traditional browsing experience. This strategic pivot not only makes advanced browsing capabilities accessible to a broader audience but also sets the stage for potential monetization through targeted advertising, leveraging user data and behavior.

As the tech landscape continues to evolve, the success of Perplexity’s new offering will depend on its ability to differentiate itself from established browsers and effectively communicate the unique benefits of its AI-driven approach. With the free version now available, users can explore its capabilities without financial commitment, potentially paving the way for deeper integration of AI technology in everyday browsing habits.
