Published this month, the report reveals that cyber criminals can now transition from initial access to comprehensive system compromise in less than 30 minutes on average—sometimes in mere seconds. AI is serving as a crucial tool, enabling attackers to quickly generate realistic phishing emails, research multiple targets in minutes, and write malicious code, even in the absence of coding expertise. This technological advantage allows smaller groups to execute campaigns that once required larger, coordinated efforts.
As a result, human defenders are struggling to maintain pace with the rapid evolution of AI-driven cyber threats. Many cybersecurity processes, from alert triage to incident response, rely heavily on human decision-making, which can take days to weeks due to factors such as manual approvals and alert backlogs. The report indicates that this slower response time is no longer viable for staying ahead of increasingly agile cyber criminals.
The report also underscores how barriers to entry for cyber crime have significantly diminished, as criminal organizations are now leveraging AI tools to code, test exploits, and refine their attacks in “rapid cycles.” This capability is shared across their networks, expanding the attack surface as more platforms and workflows become vulnerable. One particular concern highlighted is the embedding of hidden instructions in emails, documents, or web pages that can manipulate AI systems or influence their behavior.
To bridge this growing speed gap, the report advocates for several key changes within cybersecurity teams. Immediate containment should be prioritized through automated actions that can take place while an intrusion occurs. “Organizations should prioritize tools that enable automated containment, enforce policy at scale, and provide auditability for every automated decision,” the report states.
Additionally, the implementation of zero-trust frameworks is recommended, along with treating AI platforms as critical infrastructure due to their connection to sensitive data and multiple systems. The report also suggests that human-AI collaboration, where live cyber analysts supervise various AI functions, could enhance defense capabilities. This would speed up detection and mitigation efforts, allowing for timely intervention and adjustments as needed.
