OpenAI Releases Open-Source Safety Policies to Protect Teens in AI Applications

OpenAI unveils open-source safety policies to protect teens from AI interactions, addressing critical risks amid ongoing lawsuits linked to ChatGPT’s harmful effects.

OpenAI is tackling the critical issue of online safety for minors amid a wave of lawsuits related to its AI model, ChatGPT. Following claims that the chatbot contributed to the deaths of several young users, including a tragic case involving 16-year-old Adam Raine, OpenAI has announced a new initiative aimed at mitigating risks associated with AI interactions. On Tuesday, the company unveiled a set of open-source, prompt-based safety policies designed to provide developers with tools to create safer AI applications for teenagers.

The newly released safety policies focus on five harmful categories that AI systems can expose younger users to: graphic violence and sexual content, harmful body ideals and behaviors, dangerous activities and challenges, romantic or violent role play, and age-restricted goods and services. This initiative allows developers to easily integrate these policies into their systems, avoiding the complexities and frequent missteps associated with creating teen safety rules from the ground up, as acknowledged by OpenAI.

OpenAI’s collaboration with Common Sense Media, a notable child safety advocacy organization, and everyone.ai, an AI safety consultancy, has helped shape these prompt-based policies. According to Robbie Torney, head of AI and digital assessments at Common Sense Media, this approach establishes a baseline for safety across the developer ecosystem, allowing for future adaptations and improvements since the policies are open-source.

The urgency of these safety measures is underscored by the context in which they are being introduced. OpenAI is currently facing at least eight lawsuits alleging that its chatbot has played a role in the deaths of users. Court documents indicate that Raine had interactions with ChatGPT where topics of suicide were referenced over 1,200 times, raising serious concerns about the model’s ability to handle sensitive discussions appropriately. Following this and other incidents, including multiple suicides and claims of AI-induced psychotic episodes, OpenAI has previously implemented parental controls and other protective features geared toward users under 18.

Despite these efforts, the company emphasizes that the new policies represent a “meaningful safety floor” rather than a comprehensive solution. OpenAI acknowledges that no model’s safety guardrails are infallible, as demonstrated by the ongoing legal challenges. Teenagers have found ways to bypass existing safety measures through persistent engagement and creative prompting, highlighting the complex nature of AI safety.

The adoption of these open-source safety policies could prove beneficial, especially for smaller teams and independent developers who often lack the resources to construct robust safety systems. However, the effectiveness of the new policies will largely depend on how thoroughly developers implement them and whether they are resilient against the types of challenging interactions that have previously exposed vulnerabilities in ChatGPT’s safety features.

While the newly provided prompts aim to improve interactions between AI systems and younger users, they do not fully resolve the broader issue raised by regulators and safety advocates: that AI systems capable of engaging in extended conversations with minors may need more than just improved prompts. Real change may require fundamentally different architectural designs or independent monitoring mechanisms that operate outside the AI model.

For the time being, OpenAI’s release of these downloadable teen safety policies marks a significant step toward enhancing AI safety for younger audiences. Whether this initiative will suffice to address the pressing concerns surrounding AI interactions with minors remains a question that courts, regulators, and public opinion will soon confront.
