ARU and Arm Launch AI Lab in Cambridge to Drive Industry-Academic Collaboration

Anglia Ruskin University and Arm have launched the ARU Arm AI Lab in Cambridge, enhancing collaboration on industry-driven AI research and PhD projects.

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and Arm have launched a new AI lab in Cambridge, designed to bridge the gap between academic research and practical industry applications. The ARU Arm AI Lab, located within the university’s School of Computing and Information Science, is supported by a donation from Arm and features advanced computing systems built on Arm technology. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration between university researchers and Arm engineers while facilitating student-led projects and doctoral research.

This development reflects a broader trend in higher education, where partnerships with technology firms increasingly influence the curriculum and research landscape for artificial intelligence. The lab will facilitate joint research activities between ARU academics and Arm, including co-funded PhD projects that emphasize practical AI applications.

Doctoral researchers will collaborate with visiting Arm staff and university faculty to explore AI use cases in critical fields such as healthcare and life sciences. This focus on real-world impact is essential, as institutions are under pressure to demonstrate the tangible benefits of their AI research. The partnership builds on an existing relationship between ARU and Arm, which already includes distance learning initiatives and industry-supported teaching programs.

Professor Laurie Butler, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Anglia Ruskin University, emphasized the significance of the lab, stating, “We value our strong relationship with Arm, and this new facility brings together ARU’s applied computing expertise with Arm’s formidable AI capabilities. The ARU Arm AI Lab will ensure our researchers and students have access to the most advanced technology available. It will see ARU academics working directly with Arm’s AI platforms and tools to address real-world challenges, particularly in areas such as medical technology, where AI has enormous potential to improve lives.”

The collaboration also extends into formal education and skills development initiatives. ARU offers a distance learning Postgraduate Certificate in Embedded Computing on Arm, supported by Arm Education, focusing on the application of machine learning techniques across various industry contexts. Furthermore, ARU is a founding member of the Arm Semiconductor Education Alliance, launched in 2023, which aims to bolster skills development and talent acquisition within the semiconductor sector.

Students at ARU are already engaged in industry-linked projects set by Arm and have access to placement opportunities within the company. Arm views the new lab as a way to enhance Cambridge’s reputation as a hub for technology research and development, while further solidifying the connection between academia and industry.

Shantu Roy, Vice President of Developer Relations and Customer Engagement at Arm, noted, “Cambridge has long been a global centre for innovation, and we are proud to expand our partnership with Anglia Ruskin University through the ARU Arm AI Lab. By bringing together academia and industry around the latest Arm AI technologies, we can accelerate research, support emerging talent, and drive innovation across the wider technology ecosystem.”

The establishment of the lab underscores a pivotal shift in higher education, where access to industry infrastructure and tools is becoming increasingly vital in shaping AI programs. As universities adapt to the evolving technological landscape, collaborative efforts like this aim to equip students and researchers with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of AI in various sectors.

The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 are now open, recognizing education technology organizations that demonstrate measurable impact across K–12, higher education, and lifelong learning. These awards welcome entries from the UK, the Americas, and internationally, with submissions evaluated based on evidence of outcomes and real-world applications.
