University of Tokyo’s Matsuo-Iwasawa Lab and Ateneo Launch Free AI Course for Students

University of Tokyo’s Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory partners with Ateneo de Manila to launch a free AI course for 7,700 students, enhancing Filipino innovation capacity.

The Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) welcomed a delegation from the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory, alongside representatives from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on April 1, 2026. This collaborative exchange focused on advancing AI education, promoting startup incubation, and facilitating technology transfer, emphasizing the shared ambition to bolster AI capacity among Filipino students and researchers.

The meeting featured prominent figures in AI research and diplomacy, led by Professor Yutaka Matsuo, a noted expert in artificial intelligence and Professor of Technology Management for Innovation at the University of Tokyo. He was accompanied by Technical Assistants Erin Hirakawa and Aoi Sumitani from the Matsuo Laboratory. Diplomatic representatives included Naobumi Yokota, Minister for Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Japan, alongside Koji Isowa, First Secretary, and Shino Yamauchi from the JICA Philippines Office. Faculty and staff from various academic units at Ateneo de Manila University participated, representing institutions such as the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM), the School of Science and Engineering (SOSE), and the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS).

This gathering served as a platform for a comprehensive exchange of best practices in three focal areas: AI education, startup incubation, and technology transfer. Discussion revolved around how universities can equip students with essential skills for an AI-driven economy and the role of institutional frameworks in promoting research commercialization through effective intellectual property management and innovation ecosystems.

The presence of Ateneo BUILD, which enhances applied research at the intersection of data science, AI, and entrepreneurship, alongside AIPO, which functions as the University’s Innovation and Technology Support Office, highlighted Ateneo’s commitment to fostering innovation. Both entities shared forthcoming initiatives, including a new incubation track for student-led tech startups that integrates expertise in IP protection, commercialization, customer validation, and data-driven venture development. This collaboration aims to bridge the gap between advanced AI research and its practical applications within the Philippine context.

A significant highlight of the visit was the introduction of the Global Consumer Intelligence (GCI) World April 2026 program, a free, three-month online lecture series from the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory. This course covers fundamental concepts of AI and data science, particularly in marketing, and is accessible to students of all academic backgrounds. In 2025, the program attracted over 7,700 participants from more than 430 universities across 30 countries. The Matsuo Laboratory expressed eagerness to welcome applications from Filipino students, with the promise of outstanding participants being invited for a study tour in Japan, which presents an invaluable opportunity for further academic and professional growth. The course is set to begin on April 8, 2026, with applications open until April 7, 2026, at 11:00 AM PHT.

The collaboration between the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory, the Embassy of Japan, JICA, and Ateneo de Manila University underscores the strengthening academic and institutional ties between Japan and the Philippines, particularly in the realms of science, technology, and innovation. As AI continues to transform industries worldwide, partnerships like this are pivotal in equipping Filipino students and researchers to excel in this dynamic landscape.

AIPO anticipates ongoing collaboration with the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory and the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, aiming to expand educational and innovation opportunities within the Ateneo community and beyond.

At AIPressa, my work focuses on discovering how artificial intelligence is transforming the way we learn and teach. I've covered everything from adaptive learning platforms to the debate over ethical AI use in classrooms and universities. My approach: balancing enthusiasm for educational innovation with legitimate concerns about equity and access. When I'm not writing about EdTech, I'm probably exploring new AI tools for educators or reflecting on how technology can truly democratize knowledge without leaving anyone behind.
