The survey reveals that 74% of respondents utilize AI at least a few times each week, with 60% engaging with it daily. Notably, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot emerged as the most widely adopted tools, collectively accounting for 55% of reported usage, while many professionals reported using multiple platforms for various tasks.
The frequency of AI interaction appears to have enhanced many finance and accounting professionals’ abilities to identify machine-generated content. Respondents cited distinct signs such as unusual formatting, generic language, and excessive punctuation. Some noted discrepancies between AI-generated text and the familiar styles of clients or candidates, with others identifying factual inaccuracies, including instances where AI content did not conform to UK accounting standards or contained glaring errors.
One participant recalled an instance where a CEO presented a diagram that erroneously illustrated eight days in a week. Another respondent remarked on the use of AI to assess whether job candidates had relied on it for interview preparations. These observations underscore a growing awareness of AI’s limitations and potential pitfalls.
The survey highlighted a notable gap between AI adoption and the implementation of internal controls. Approximately 40% of respondents reported that they chose AI tools primarily for their convenience or based on recommendations from others, rather than focusing on accuracy or compliance. This trend raises concerns in a sector that manages sensitive financial data and operates under stringent regulatory frameworks.
Participants expressed apprehension about data storage and management practices once client information is entered into consumer AI tools. Some disclosed that unsafe usage of AI had already prompted internal disciplinary actions, signaling that certain firms are addressing governance challenges in the wake of adoption rather than preemptively. Helen Brooks, Head of Commercial at Cloud2Me, commented, “These findings reflect a profession that is maturing in its relationship with AI—but maturing unevenly. Finance and accountancy professionals are sharp enough to spot AI-generated content, yet many are still selecting tools based on convenience rather than compliance credentials.”
In a sector where accuracy and data security are paramount, the identified gap poses a significant risk. Brooks noted that the concerns surrounding GDPR compliance are not merely theoretical; they are manifesting in real disciplinary actions within firms. The pressing question for these practices is not whether to adopt AI, but rather if they have the necessary governance structures in place to use it responsibly.
The survey responses also provided insight into how finance professionals identify AI-written material. One participant remarked, “M dashes, underscored, conversational speak. It’s a red flag,” while another noted, “The big dashes in the answers.” Such observations reflect an increasing familiarity with the stylistic nuances associated with popular generative AI tools. Respondents expressed frustration with polished yet generic phrasing, which often failed to resonate with the communication styles of the individuals represented.
As one respondent articulated, “You know your clients, and the vocabulary doesn’t correlate to the individual.” The accountancy sector is under mounting pressure to evaluate how AI can be integrated into daily operations without compromising privacy, record-keeping, and accuracy standards. Firms find themselves balancing potential productivity gains against the risk that generative models may produce false information or process data in ways that expose them to legal and reputational risks.

The survey indicates that AI usage is no longer an experimental endeavor for many professionals in the field. However, the more critical question raised by the findings is whether firms can establish robust controls to align this routine use with safeguards that prevent errors, misuse, and breaches involving client data.
As articulated by one respondent, “Several staff members had to have disciplinaries over unsafe AI practice. Where is the data we upload going? Where is it stored? Big GDPR problem.” This highlights the urgent need for firms to reevaluate their governance frameworks as they navigate the complexities of AI integration in finance and accounting.
