WIT STUDIO has confirmed the use of generative AI in the background art for the opening animation of its latest series, Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke. Following suspicions regarding the origins of the artwork, the animation production studio launched an investigation, which determined that a portion of the backgrounds indeed utilized generative AI. As a corrective measure, WIT STUDIO announced that these sections will be redrawn and replaced beginning with Episode 2.
In a statement addressing the issue, WIT STUDIO clarified that the use of generative AI is not permitted in the production of its animated content. Furthermore, the studio emphasized that neither the background art director nor the background art studio involved—Vietnam-based NAM HAI ART—is responsible for the controversy. NAM HAI ART has previously contributed background art for other notable series, including Attack on Titan Final Season and Witch Hat Atelier, showcasing its established position in the industry since its founding in 2011.
Background art in anime often relies on outsourcing, as many studios lack internal departments dedicated to this specialty. Prominent Japanese background art studios include Studio Pablo, Kusanagi, Deho Gallery, and others. The collaboration with international studios like NAM HAI ART reflects a trend in the industry, which has increasingly looked beyond domestic borders for artistic talent.
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke premiered on April 4, 2023, and adapts the third part of the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novel series, written by Miya Kazuki and illustrated by You Shiina. The series follows the journey of Myne, who, after a troubling encounter with a noble, embarks on a new life as Rozemyne, the adopted daughter of an archduke.
