Global finance leaders have raised alarms over Anthropic’s Mythos AI, warning that it could expose critical flaws in both financial and core IT systems. Major banks and governments are now testing the model early to identify vulnerabilities before any wider release. Officials caution that while such tools might bolster defenses, they could also empower cybercriminals to exploit weaknesses in the system.

The urgency around these concerns has led to high-level discussions and emergency-style meetings, particularly after early testing revealed vulnerabilities across major operating systems and widely used applications. Industry experts suggest that Mythos could have an “unprecedented” ability to detect and exploit cybersecurity flaws, though they note that its full capabilities remain largely uncharted territory.

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne indicated that the implications of Mythos dominated conversations during this week’s International Monetary Fund meetings in Washington. “Certainly it is serious enough to warrant the attention of all finance ministers,” he remarked, stressing that the challenge posed by AI differs from physical risks due to its “unknown, unknown.” He underscored the necessity for safeguards to ensure the resiliency of financial systems.

In response to these concerns, major banks and governmental agencies are being granted early access to Mythos to help assess and mitigate vulnerabilities before it is rolled out more broadly. C. S. Venkatakrishnan, CEO of Barclays, characterized the situation as one that demands immediate attention. “It’s serious enough that people have to worry,” he stated, emphasizing the need to swiftly understand and rectify the vulnerabilities exposed by the model.

Anthropic has disclosed that Mythos has already identified multiple flaws across various operating systems, financial platforms, and web browsers. Consequently, access has been confined to a select group of institutions, including major technology firms and systemically important banks, in an effort to fortify defenses prior to broader exposure. Authorities in the United States have taken comparable measures; the Treasury Department has encouraged leading banks to deploy the model internally to uncover weaknesses while seeking to create a controlled version for federal agencies. A memo from the White House Office of Management and Budget outlined plans to introduce safeguards ahead of any such access.

Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, stressed the need to take the implications for cybercrime seriously. “We are having to look very carefully now what this latest AI development could mean for the risk of cyber crime,” he said, cautioning that tools like Mythos may empower “bad actors” to identify and exploit system vulnerabilities more easily.

Senior U.S. officials, including Scott Bessent and Jerome Powell, have already convened Wall Street executives to discuss these pressing risks. Attendees included leaders from major banks such as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley, underscoring the systemic importance of the issue at hand. Concerns about security are not limited to Anthropic; sources suggest another U.S. AI company could release a similarly capable model without the same level of safeguards.

James Wise of Balderton Capital described Mythos as “the first of what will be many more powerful models” that could expose system vulnerabilities. His Sovereign AI unit is investing in companies that focus on AI security, adding, “We hope the models that expose vulnerabilities are also the models which will fix them.”

Mythos is part of Anthropic’s Claude family of models, a competitor to offerings from OpenAI and Google. Unlike earlier releases, the company has restricted access due to concerns about the potential misuse of the tool to uncover sensitive flaws or breach protected systems. Internal testing raised alarms after the model identified critical bugs that would typically require highly skilled hackers to discover, with some vulnerabilities dating back decades, exposing gaps overlooked by traditional security systems.

As the risks associated with Mythos have become clearer, they have also spilled into policy disputes. The Pentagon recently designated Anthropic as a potential supply chain risk, a measure usually reserved for foreign adversaries. The company successfully challenged a proposed ban in court, arguing it would lead to significant financial losses. Within national security circles, Mythos has introduced new uncertainty regarding how cyber threats are assessed. One official likened its impact to equipping an ordinary hacker with tools similar to those used by elite operators.

Despite the risks, authorities continue to engage with Anthropic. Federal agencies are preparing for potential controlled access, while regulators and financial institutions race to understand and address the vulnerabilities that Mythos has already begun to uncover.
