Officials emphasize that the initiative aims to foster economic growth by attracting investment, retaining talent, and expanding access to advanced technologies for smaller businesses across the commonwealth.
The collaboration marks a significant milestone as it unites Pennsylvania’s top research universities under a common vision for leveraging AI and quantum technologies to benefit local industries. “This collaboration will serve as a powerful economic catalyst for Pennsylvania,” stated Barr von Oehsen, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. “It will transform groundbreaking research into solutions for the commonwealth’s energy, manufacturing, agricultural, life sciences, AI, and robotics sectors, while driving lasting job creation and building a future-proof workforce.”
Jen Gilburg, Deputy Secretary for Technology and Entrepreneurship at the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, echoed this sentiment, noting that the initiative will turn world-class research into new companies and high-quality jobs throughout Pennsylvania. “This initiative will accelerate breakthroughs in technologies that are shaping the future of our economy,” she added.
The Keystone AI + Quantum Factory is structured around three interconnected pillars: world-class research, workforce development, and shared infrastructure. Theresa Mayer, Vice President for Research at Carnegie Mellon University, remarked, “Access to advanced computing is quickly becoming the limiting factor in both AI and quantum research. Anand Jagota, Vice-Provost for Research at Lehigh University, highlighted how the collaboration presents a coordinated platform that enhances Pennsylvania’s standing in the national research landscape. He stated, “By aligning talent and infrastructure across our leading research universities, we create a single point of entry for federal agencies and industry partners that none of us could offer alone.”
Andrew Read, Senior Vice President for Research at The Pennsylvania State University, also recognized the significance of the coordinated effort, asserting that it is crucial for ensuring that Pennsylvania remains at the forefront of technologies defining the next century. Josh Gladden, Vice President of Research at Temple University, added that the historic coordination will help attract talent and industry while supporting both emerging workers and small businesses.
