Amkor Stock Soars 7%, Elevating Q1 Earnings Expectations Amid AI Packaging Demand

Amkor Technology’s stock jumped 7.1% to $78.30 ahead of its Q1 earnings report, forecasting sales between $1.60B and $1.70B amid surging AI packaging demand.

TEMPE, Ariz., April 26, 2026, 08:02 MST — Amkor Technology Inc. is poised to release its first-quarter earnings report on Monday, following a notable 7.1% surge in its stock on Friday. The chip-packaging firm, whose shares closed at $78.10 and rose to $78.30 in after-hours trading, is now under pressure to demonstrate that the rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is translating into tangible financial results.

Investors are particularly interested in whether Amkor can effectively convert the increasing demand for advanced packaging—an essential process that involves assembling and testing chips after wafer production—into profits, especially as the company invests heavily in expanding its capacity. The firm will announce its financial results after the Nasdaq closes on Monday, with a conference call scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.

Amkor has set ambitious targets for the first quarter, forecasting net sales between $1.60 billion and $1.70 billion and a gross margin in the range of 12.5% to 13.5%. The company anticipates a diluted earnings per share (EPS) between 18 and 28 cents. For the full year, Amkor plans to allocate approximately $2.5 billion to $3.0 billion for capital expenditures, reflecting a substantial increase from its $6.71 billion in sales recorded in 2025.

Market analysts are projecting revenue of $1.63 billion and an EPS of 23 cents, as noted by StockStory, suggesting a year-on-year revenue growth of 25.4%. The company’s stock has outperformed the average analyst price target, bolstered by a month-long rally leading up to Monday’s results announcement.

In a call held in February, Chief Executive Kevin Engel described 2026 as an investment year. The company is preparing for the mass production of high-density fan-out (HDFO) packaging techniques in the latter half of the year—methods that are particularly important for AI and high-performance computing applications. Engel emphasized that most of the projected equipment spending for the year will focus on HDFO and testing.

However, the increased capital expenditures have raised concerns. Charles Shi of Needham questioned the capex guidance during the February conference, noting that it exceeded prior expectations. In response, CFO Megan Faust clarified that early spending in Arizona is not being matched by government incentives, requiring the 2026 guidance to reflect “minimal offsets.”

Amkor is striving to expand its market share in an industry dominated by Asian competitors. Its annual report highlights key players in the outsourced semiconductor packaging and testing market, including ASE Technology, JCET Group, and Powertech Technology. Furthermore, Amkor faces competitive pressures from foundries and contract manufacturers that have begun offering their own packaging services.

Analysts are divided on the stock’s outlook. MarketBeat indicates four “Buy” ratings and eight “Hold” ratings, with an average target price of $51.13. Individual forecasts vary, with Needham setting a target of $65, Morgan Stanley maintaining $45, and B. Riley at $48. However, the stock’s performance above $78 complicates the narrative ahead of Monday’s report.

Amkor’s challenges are clear: it faces cyclical fluctuations in chip demand, a heavy reliance on a small number of customers, and limited long-term contracts. High fixed costs and external pressures from export controls and tariffs add to the complexity. If the roll-out of AI-driven packaging initiatives faces delays or if major clients adjust their timelines, Amkor could experience an immediate financial impact before any potential revenue growth materializes.

As Amkor approaches its financial announcement, it distinguishes itself with its U.S. headquarters and advanced packaging capabilities, contributing to regional efforts to stabilize chip supply chains. However, to shift the conversation and meet investor expectations, the company must provide clear evidence of earnings momentum, moving beyond a narrative focused solely on capital expenditures.
