The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has unveiled a pilot program utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline student access to institutional policies at the Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC). Launched on April 30, the initiative aims to simplify the retrieval of university policy documents, enabling students without technical or legal backgrounds to navigate the system effectively.
This innovative digital hub leverages a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers model, significantly reducing the need for students to manually sift through extensive files. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized that the platform is designed to alleviate confusion surrounding university policies, thereby enhancing transparency and governance within higher education.
“Policies that are hard to access or understand may result in confusion and inefficiency, but with the University Policy Hub, we address this challenge head-on,” Solidum stated. He highlighted the importance of this resource in promoting accessibility to essential information for all students.
The project, spearheaded by CSPC researchers under the leadership of Joseph Jessie Oñate, received P1 million in funding from the DOST’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (Pcieerd). This financial backing falls under the Good Governance through Data Science and Decision Support Systems program, showcasing the government’s commitment to leveraging technology in educational advancements.
According to DOST-Pcieerd Deputy Executive Director Niñaliza Escorial, the initiative is expected to serve as a model for other educational institutions across the Philippines. “We are looking forward to many HEIs (higher education institutions) and SUCs (state universities and colleges) in the Philippines to work together and adopt this innovation to improve academic and administrative efficiency,” she noted.
The introduction of this AI-driven platform reflects a broader trend in educational reform, where technology is increasingly being used to enhance the efficiency of academic and administrative processes. As universities continue to navigate the complexities of policy management, tools like the University Policy Hub may become pivotal in ensuring that students can easily access and understand the regulations that affect their academic lives.
By addressing the accessibility of institutional policies, the DOST aims to foster an environment of informed decision-making among students. This initiative not only represents a step toward modernizing educational frameworks but also reinforces the Philippines’ commitment to enhancing governance in higher education through data-driven solutions.
