Milestone and DCAI Launch EU’s Compliant AI for Smart Cities Using Gefion Supercomputer

Milestone Systems partners with DCAI to deploy a compliant AI Vision Language Model for smart cities, leveraging the Gefion supercomputer to enhance traffic management across Europe.

Milestone Systems announced a partnership with DCAI to enhance the development and deployment of responsible AI models across Europe. Leveraging DCAI’s Gefion supercomputer, the collaboration aims to bolster European compliance and sovereignty in AI initiatives, particularly focusing on traffic management and smart city applications.

The collaboration will utilize the Gefion cloud platform, which is based in the EU, for the deployment and fine-tuning of Milestone’s Vision Language Model (VLM). This arrangement ensures compliance with the European Union’s stringent data protection regulations, including the AI Act and GDPR. The initiative is aligned with the EU AI Factory strategy, offering a secure and compliant foundation for advanced video analytics.

At the heart of this collaboration is Milestone’s AI Vision Language Model, developed in conjunction with NVIDIA. The VLM automates the transformation of video footage into detailed written outputs, including reports, summaries, and real-time alerts. Its applications are designed to optimize traffic management and enhance smart city functions in various European urban areas, including cities, ports, and airports. The system will also facilitate the development of AI agents specifically tailored for analytics tasks that meet public sector requirements.

The operation of the VLM on DCAI’s EU-based Gefion infrastructure ensures that all data, training, and deployment processes remain under European jurisdiction. This commitment to full data sovereignty is increasingly emphasized by policymakers throughout Europe. Additionally, the integration of the Hafnia Data Library, which consists of ethically sourced datasets, will further support compliance and transparency in AI development.

DCAI’s platform is designed to provide scalable access to advanced AI computational resources for a variety of European clients, including developers, governments, and municipalities. This capability enables local entities to build, train, and deploy AI models that adhere to European privacy and ethical standards.

“Our mission at DCAI is to provide the best AI infrastructure that does not compromise on data sovereignty, and we are proud to see companies building on top of that foundation to advance responsible AI initiatives. Our work with Milestone and NVIDIA helps position Europe at the forefront of responsible AI innovation, setting new benchmarks for sovereign AI infrastructure,” said Dr. Nadia Carlsten, CEO of DCAI.

Moreover, the collaboration includes the use of NVIDIA’s hardware and software technologies, which enhance the performance of the Vision Language Model. Milestone highlights that the combination of data resources, AI model capabilities, and secure supercomputing infrastructure will enable stakeholders to develop compliant and effective AI solutions specifically tailored for the European market.

“This collaboration is a powerful step toward ensuring that Europe’s AI future is built on trust, transparency, and technological sovereignty. By combining Hafnia’s vast, ethically sourced data library and VLM capabilities with DCAI’s secure cloud and NVIDIA’s AI leadership, we’re creating a uniquely European AI ecosystem that supports municipalities, governments, and researchers in building compliant, high-impact AI solutions,” said Thomas Jensen, CEO of Milestone Systems.

The fine-tuned Milestone Vision Language Model is characterized as a leap forward in video understanding and contextual AI for smart cities and traffic management. Operating on Gefion’s EU-based cloud ensures that data, training, and deployment remain under European control, a crucial step in aligning with the EU’s vision for ethical, secure, and sovereign AI.

This partnership not only reinforces the commitment to responsible AI in Europe but also highlights the increasing importance of local data sovereignty as AI technologies become integral to urban development and public safety. As Europe continues to push forward with innovative technologies, the collaboration between Milestone, DCAI, and NVIDIA may serve as a model for future AI initiatives in the region.
