Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of A.I. models, has rapidly emerged as a key player in the artificial intelligence landscape since its founding in 2021. The company has recently undergone a significant transformation fueled by high-profile hires, including Rahul Patil as chief technology officer, previously from Stripe, and Vitaly Gudanets as chief information security officer, who joined from Netflix.
While OpenAI‘s ChatGPT continues to dominate personal use, Anthropic’s Claude models—including the newly released Claude Opus 4.5—now command a 32 percent share of the enterprise large language model market. The company’s valuation has skyrocketed from $61.5 billion in March to an impressive $350 billion this month, following critical partnerships with technology giants Nvidia and Microsoft.
Anthropic is perceived as a safer, research-oriented alternative to its competitors, emphasizing principles such as interpretability, steerability, and alignment with human values in its model development. Founded by seven former OpenAI employees, Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation and has built a leadership team that includes veterans from Netflix, Instagram, and Stripe.
At the helm of Anthropic is CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei, who left OpenAI amid disagreements regarding A.I. safety. He has since rejected proposals for a merger with OpenAI, reaffirming the company’s commitment to an independent research agenda. His sister, Daniela Amodei, serves as president and co-founder, overseeing core operations and working closely with senior leaders, including Patil and chief architect Sam McCandlish.
Another notable figure is Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram, who now holds the position of chief product officer. Following the sale of his personalized news app Artifact to Yahoo in 2024, Krieger’s expertise has been instrumental in enhancing Anthropic’s product offerings. Rahul Patil, who succeeded McCandlish as CTO, brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at Stripe, Microsoft, AWS, and Oracle to lead Anthropic’s engineering organization.
As chief science officer and co-founder, Jared Kaplan guides the company’s long-term research agenda, leveraging his academic background in physics and machine learning. Meanwhile, Jan Leike, leading the alignment science efforts, focuses on ensuring that advanced A.I. systems remain controllable and aligned with human objectives. His previous experience with OpenAI’s superalignment team positions him well in this critical role.
Additionally, Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer, oversees Anthropic’s compute infrastructure. He previously led the research engineering team behind GPT-3 at OpenAI, playing a crucial role in the development of large-scale computing systems. Vitaly Gudanets, as chief information security officer, manages the company’s security strategies, drawing from his prior experience at Netflix.
Jack Clark, co-founder and head of policy, shapes Anthropic’s global policy efforts, engaging in international discussions on safety and regulation. His background in technology journalism and A.I. governance provides a strong foundation for this role. Krishna Rao, chief financial officer, is responsible for the company’s financial strategy, drawing on his extensive experience across various high-growth companies.
As Anthropic continues to grow, its leadership team is bolstered by a board that includes prominent figures such as Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, and Jay Kreps, CEO of Confluent. The company has also established the Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), a separate board aimed at aligning governance with its mission of developing advanced A.I. for humanity’s long-term benefit.
As Anthropic forges ahead in the competitive A.I. landscape, its focus on safety, research, and ethical practices could position it as a leader committed to developing technology that aligns with human values, potentially influencing the broader discourse on A.I. governance and ethics.
