Harper Adams University has been awarded £500,000 to enhance its teaching capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and engineering. The funding, provided by the Office for Students, England’s higher education regulator, aims to establish a new centre for AI in manufacturing and agricultural technology in Telford.
Of the total funding, £400,000 will be allocated to the development of the new facility, which will be located in Telford town centre, specifically in a building known as the Quad. The university plans to equip this centre with high-specification IT equipment, including AI workstations, immersive learning pods, edge computing servers, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices.
The remaining £100,000 will be invested in upgrading the university’s Collaborative Simulation Laboratory at its Edgmond campus. This facility is central to the university’s engineering teaching and research, employing advanced simulation techniques to test and refine products prior to their physical production.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ken Sloan expressed enthusiasm about the funding, stating, “This funding will help us to deliver high-quality AI learning in the heart of the community we serve.” The investment is part of a broader initiative involving 60 universities or colleges across England, aimed at improving the quality of education in critical technological fields.
