AI’s Role in Defining Humanity
In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence is prompting deep reflections on human identity. A new book titled “AI and the Art of Being Human,” conceived by AI with contributions from Jeff Abbott and Andrew Maynard, serves as a practical guide to navigating these complexities. The authors emphasize the importance of retaining human qualities in an age increasingly influenced by AI.
Maynard, a professor at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society, noted that the book arose from a growing realization: AI has the capacity to replicate aspects of what many consider defining features of humanity. This technology compels individuals to question their identities as it becomes more integrated into daily life. “How do I hold onto what makes me who I am and thrive when everything around us is changing so fast?” he reflected.
Abbott, a founding partner of Blitzscaling Ventures, expressed concerns about AI’s potential to diminish human interaction, thereby reducing opportunities for compassion. He argued for a broader ethical framework when designing AI systems, stating that developers must take into account the voices and experiences of those affected by AI technologies. “Those who are adversely affected by our actions in building or using AI tools should be taken into account,” he stressed.
The book introduces the notion of AI as a “mirror,” reflecting not only our external appearances but also our internal beliefs. Maynard explained that AI’s ability to emulate human speech, reasoning, and emotional connections can reveal truths about ourselves that we may not be consciously aware of. However, this mirror effect can also distort perceptions if one is not careful, leading to a skewed understanding of what it means to be human.
As a counterbalance to potential existential threats posed by AI, Abbott and Maynard propose 21 practical tools that aim to help individuals thrive in this new landscape. Abbott described these tools as a blend of thoughtful introspection and actionable strategies, inspired by frameworks such as “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” One of these tools, called the intent map, helps users articulate their values and establish decision-making boundaries concerning AI usage.
Maynard highlighted concerns surrounding the concept of “agentic AI,” systems that operate autonomously in making decisions. While this offers notable efficiencies, it risks eroding human agency if not approached critically. To mitigate this risk, the authors advocate for four guiding postures: curiosity, clarity, intentionality, and care.
Abbott further emphasized the need for self-reliance in the Emersonian sense, urging individuals to maintain cognitive sovereignty amid increasing reliance on AI. This concept is not merely a nostalgic reflection; it has become vital in preserving one’s sense of identity and purpose in an automated world.
Interestingly, AI played a significant role in the book’s creation process. Maynard shared that they employed AI to accelerate writing, ensuring that they embodied the principles discussed throughout the text. This collaborative effort has resulted in a product that combines human guidance with AI-generated insights, underscoring the potential for harmonious coexistence between human creativity and machine efficiency.
Looking ahead, Maynard hopes that readers will view the book as a practical resource to return to as they navigate their lives in an AI-influenced world. He aspires for it to be integrated into student curricula at ASU, equipping the next generation with the tools necessary to thrive in an AI future. “The hope, of course, is that the ideas and tools here are part of every student’s journey,” he concluded. In a world where AI continues to evolve, understanding how to remain authentically human may be the most crucial skill of all.
