As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly permeates the music industry, the country music scene in Nashville is experiencing a significant shift. Producers are increasingly integrating AI tools, such as Suno, into their creative processes, marking a departure from traditional methods that have long characterized the genre.
In a recent report by The Verge, insights from various songwriters, producers, and artists illustrate the profound changes taking place in country music. The songwriter Trannie Anderson, who has collaborated with notable artists like Reba McEntire, remarked on the ubiquitous presence of AI in Nashville. “Everyone’s using it: from entry-level songwriters to the top dogs,” she stated, highlighting that even major artists like Jelly Roll and Dustin Lynch are receiving digitally synthesized song demos using their own voices.
Eric Olson, a publisher interviewed in the report, advocates for the use of AI by country songwriters, citing its efficiency in the creative process. “If I can give Suno the last 20 percent and spend more time with my kids, that’s huge,” he explained, illustrating how AI can enhance work-life balance in a demanding industry.
Currently, AI tools like Suno primarily assist in demo production, generating everything from lyrics to melodies, thus streamlining the songwriting process. Singer-songwriter Maggie Reaves recently secured a contract from a “major artist” with only a day to produce a song. After drafting her lyrics, she inputted them into Suno, and her publisher deemed the result “perfect.” The integration of AI in demo recording offers a cost-effective solution, as traditional demo production can be prohibitively expensive for many working musicians. “I immediately saw this [AI] could replace that,” Reaves noted.
This shift toward AI is not entirely unexpected, given country music’s historical trajectory. Folk music journalist Kim Ruehl pointed out that contemporary pop-country emerged as a commercial extension of American folk music, often influenced by big business dynamics. The industry’s drive for efficiency—cost-cutting and profit maximization—aligns seamlessly with the adoption of AI technologies.
Throughout the decades, various “industrial advancements” have shaped pop-country, echoing the current transition towards AI. The 1960s “Countrypolitan era,” led by producer Billy Sherrill, exemplifies how the genre has evolved through commercial influences, producing chart-topping pop ballads. Similarly, the “Hat Act” era, characterized by artists like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson, emphasized thematic conformity and consolidated country radio.
AI’s role in today’s country music landscape recalls earlier transformations, such as the emergence of the “Nashville sound” that replaced the raw, blue-collar honky tonk with polished pop hits. Instead of relying on AI, producers during that era often turned to a group of reliable session musicians known as “the A Team” to enhance productivity and reinforce popular songwriting formulas. This dynamic contributed substantially to the establishment of country music as a commercial powerhouse.
While some may view the rise of AI in country music as a troubling trend, it can be interpreted as a natural evolution within an industry perpetually focused on mass market appeal.
