Dec. 15 (UPI) — The White House has unveiled a new initiative called the “U.S. Tech Force,” aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological projects across federal agencies. Announced on Monday, this program will bring together approximately 1,000 engineers and technology specialists who will focus on developing AI infrastructure and supporting a range of technology initiatives within the federal government.
“We’re trying to reshape the workforce to make sure we have the right talent on the right problems,” said Scott Kupor, Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, in an interview with CNBC. This initiative is part of the Biden administration’s broader strategy to modernize federal systems, attract tech professionals to public service, and boost the nation’s competitiveness in the global technology landscape.
The U.S. Tech Force is expected to engage in “high-impact technology initiatives” that include AI implementation, application development, data modernization, and digital service delivery across federal agencies. Participants will join a two-year employment program, working directly under agency leaders and collaborating with prominent technology companies.
Compensation for participants is projected to range from $150,000 to $200,000, inclusive of benefits. The initiative has garnered support from major private sector partners, including tech giants such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Dell, Microsoft, Nvidia, and OpenAI, as well as other prominent firms like Oracle, Palantir, and Salesforce.
This announcement follows President Donald Trump’s recent executive order establishing a national AI policy framework, which was favorably received by industry experts. The dual focus on workforce development and AI strategy reflects a commitment to addressing complex technological challenges facing the federal government.
After completing their two-year terms, members of the Tech Force will be eligible to apply for permanent positions with the participating companies, all of which have agreed to give hiring preference to graduates of the program. Additionally, these private sector partners may nominate their own employees for temporary assignments within the government.
“If you’re thinking about, long term, a career in technology, there is no bigger and more complex set of problems than we face in the federal government,” Kupor remarked, emphasizing the initiative’s significance not only for the individuals involved but also for the future of government technology.
The formation of the U.S. Tech Force marks a pivotal step toward integrating cutting-edge technology into public service. As federal agencies grapple with digital transformation, the initiative aims to cultivate a workforce equipped to tackle the evolving challenges of AI and other technological fields, ensuring that the government remains competitive in a rapidly advancing global environment.
