Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, emphasized his ongoing collaboration with fellow AI leaders during a recent interview with Bloomberg. Notable figures in the industry, such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, are among those he frequently communicates with. Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind alongside Hassabis, later founded Inflection AI and joined Microsoft last year.
In the interview, Suleyman praised Altman, highlighting his ambitious plans for OpenAI, which recently underwent a for-profit restructuring and strengthened its partnership with Microsoft. He described Altman as “courageous,” noting that OpenAI is in the process of aggressively expanding its fleet of AI data centers to manage the immense computing power required for applications like ChatGPT. “He may well turn out to be one of the great entrepreneurs of our generation,” Suleyman commented, acknowledging Altman’s rapid development of data centers and expressing confidence in the company’s ability to navigate its financial commitments despite concerns about its revenue levels.
Suleyman did not hold back in his admiration for Hassabis, calling him a “great scientist” and a “good polymath.” He asserted that Hassabis has made significant contributions to the field of AI over the years. Despite their competitive landscape, Suleyman revealed that he and Hassabis maintain a friendship, having recently texted him to congratulate him on advancements such as Nano Banana, Gemini 3, and AlphaFold.
The conversation also touched on Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI who has since parted ways with the organization and is now pursuing AI through his own venture, xAI. Suleyman described Musk as a “bulldozer,” noting his extraordinary ability to achieve what many consider impossible. He pointed to Musk’s success in disrupting multiple industries, from automotive with Tesla to aerospace with SpaceX, and his ventures into medical technology with Neuralink and tunneling with the Boring Company.
Suleyman acknowledged Musk’s foray into politics, which included significant donations to the Republican Party and a brief role in the Trump administration. Although Musk faced controversies, including a public feud with Trump, there have been recent signs of reconciliation between the two. “While Musk has a different kind of set of values,” Suleyman said, “I kind of like that he speaks his mind. He’s very unfiltered.”
As AI continues to evolve rapidly, the interactions among these leaders reflect the dynamic nature of the industry. Suleyman’s insights not only shed light on the relationships between major players like Altman and Hassabis but also highlight the contrasting approaches of Musk. This ongoing dialogue among these influential figures will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of artificial intelligence, as they navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this transformative field.
