UC San Diego’s Hao AI Lab has recently enhanced its research capabilities by acquiring one of NVIDIA’s most advanced AI systems, the DGX B200, now housed at the university’s San Diego Supercomputer Center. This significant upgrade provides the lab with enterprise-grade computing power, allowing researchers to explore new frontiers in serving large language models in production environments.
The Hao AI Lab has been pivotal in shaping AI infrastructure, significantly influencing NVIDIA’s architectural decisions. Their work on DistServe, a novel method for deploying large language models, has directly impacted the design of NVIDIA Dynamo, an open-source framework now utilized in production systems globally. With the introduction of the DGX B200, researchers are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware to further accelerate their groundbreaking research.
“DGX B200 is one of the most powerful AI systems from NVIDIA to date, which means that its performance is among the best in the world,” said Hao Zhang, an assistant professor at UC San Diego’s Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute. “It enables us to prototype and experiment much faster than using previous-generation hardware.” This enhanced capability allows the team to test more ideas quickly and efficiently, a critical factor in driving innovative research.
Currently, two significant projects are underway at the lab. The first, named FastVideo, aims to train video generation models capable of producing a five-second video from a text prompt in approximately five seconds. This real-time capability has the potential to revolutionize what’s achievable in production systems. Researchers are leveraging NVIDIA H200 GPUs in conjunction with the DGX B200, effectively optimizing their computational resources to tackle this complex problem.
The second project, Lmgame-Bench, presents a playful yet serious approach to benchmarking large language models. Utilizing popular video games like Tetris and Super Mario Bros, the project assesses how different models perform in real-time gameplay scenarios. This innovative benchmarking suite allows researchers to either evaluate a single model or pit two against each other, providing a fresh perspective on model capabilities beyond traditional benchmarks.
The advancements from the Hao AI Lab are not just confined to academic research; they have implications for real-world applications. The lab’s influence on AI infrastructure design is evident in the growing capabilities of production systems worldwide.
