60% of Brazilians View Intimate AI Conversations as Infidelity, New Study Reveals

A Gleeden survey reveals 60% of Brazilians consider intimate conversations with AI as infidelity, highlighting a shift in emotional boundaries in relationships.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life is reshaping emotional and romantic boundaries for Brazilians, according to a survey by Gleeden, a platform focused on casual relationships. Conducted in November, the research uncovered that 60% of participants believe engaging in intimate conversations with an AI constitutes infidelity if they are in a romantic relationship. This finding underscores a burgeoning discourse on the ethical and emotional implications of technology in modern relationships.

While some respondents maintain a degree of emotional detachment from AI, the data indicates a notable shift in attitudes. About 36% of participants expressed a willingness to open up emotionally to an AI, seeking comfort and conversation through technology. Additionally, 29% reported using AI tools for erotic purposes, suggesting that a segment of the population is exploring technology as a means to fulfill emotional or sexual needs.

These statistics highlight a societal divide: on one hand, there are those who resist the notion of emotional bonds with machines; on the other, a significant portion of the population is already utilizing AI to navigate personal desires. While 83% of respondents asserted that it would be impossible to fall in love with an AI, 17% conceded that such a scenario could occur. This contrast illustrates a society in transition, grappling with the implications of new interaction forms mediated by technology.

Experts caution against viewing AI as the root cause of relationship crises. Thaís Plaza, a sex therapist and Gleeden ambassador, emphasized that technology often reflects existing emotional issues rather than creates new ones. “AI is not the starting point for a divorce; it shouldn’t even be considered a topic or reason for separation,” she explained. Instead, reliance on AI can highlight emotional voids and communication gaps that already exist in relationships.

The study further examines the evolving concept of betrayal. Traditionally defined by human interactions, infidelity now increasingly incorporates relationships with algorithms. For many Brazilian respondents, the presence of emotional engagement or intimate exchanges with AI is seen as a breach of trust, regardless of whether a real person is involved. This shift prompts a reevaluation of fidelity and emotional connections in the age of technology.

As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into daily life, society faces new ethical and emotional challenges. The research suggests that relationships are not only tested by the presence of AI but also provoke profound reflections on intimacy, communication, and emotional expectations. The debate surrounding the role of AI in personal relationships is just beginning and is expected to gain importance as technology evolves.

In this context, the survey results raise intriguing questions about the nature of emotional intimacy in an increasingly digital world. Do people view conversations with AI as a legitimate form of emotional exchange, or do they see it as a dangerous encroachment on the sanctity of human relationships? As technology continues to permeate personal interactions, these discussions will likely intensify, forcing society to reconsider the implications of AI in romantic contexts.
