Australia Post has entered a partnership with AI security firm Alpha Level to enhance cyber threat detection across its national network. This initiative will focus on systems used by licensed post offices and small businesses linked to the organization, as Australia Post aims to fortify its cybersecurity measures.
The collaboration is designed to empower Australia Post’s security team to collect, process, and analyze an estimated “billions of data points” each month, significantly improving the speed and accuracy of identifying potential threats. According to Adam Cartwright, Chief Information Security Officer at Australia Post, the postal service generates around four billion data points monthly, encompassing network traffic and security logs that are scrutinized for signs of malicious activity.
Cartwright emphasized the advantages of machine learning, stating, “Machine learning helps by building models that understand what ‘good’ looks like in that data, allowing us to detect threats faster and more accurately. This not only speeds up detection but strengthens our overall security in an increasingly complex digital environment.”
Co-founded by former Microsoft Principal Data Scientist Dr. Josh Neil, Alpha Level specializes in machine learning, statistical mathematics, and artificial intelligence. Neil noted that the partnership aims to apply machine learning at scale to bolster cyber defense capabilities. “By embedding world-class machine learning into Australia Post’s security operations, we’re helping to elevate threat detection speed and precision,” he remarked.
The deployment of this technology will primarily focus on utilizing AI models to filter through vast amounts of security alerts. This will help reduce noise and isolate higher-confidence threats, enabling analysts to concentrate on the most pressing issues.
