Raspberry Pi Launches AI HAT+ 2 with 8GB RAM for $130, Enhancing Generative AI Capabilities

Raspberry Pi unveils the AI HAT+ 2, featuring 8GB RAM and 40 TOPS AI performance for $130, revolutionizing generative AI applications on the Raspberry Pi 5.

Raspberry Pi has introduced the AI HAT+ 2, an enhanced add-on board aimed at generative AI applications, priced at $130. Featuring 8GB of RAM and the Hailo 10H chip, the new board delivers 40 TOPS of AI performance and is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5, significantly boosting its capacity to manage AI workloads.

The AI HAT+ 2 showcases multiple advancements over its predecessor, which debuted last year. While the original model primarily focused on image processing, the new version includes onboard RAM, enabling it to execute compact generative AI models, including Llama 3.2, DeepSeek-R1-Distill, and various Qwen models. This capability allows users to train and fine-tune AI models more effectively. Demonstrations have illustrated its potential, such as generating text descriptions from camera streams and answering questions about scene details, including detecting the presence of individuals. Additionally, it can perform text translations, exemplified by converting French to English using Qwen2.

Despite its formidable specifications, tech YouTuber Jeff Geerling noted that a standalone Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM frequently outshines the AI HAT+ 2 across various models. Geerling attributes this performance gap to the add-on board’s power consumption limitations; the Raspberry Pi 5 operates at a maximum of 10 watts, while the AI HAT+ 2 has its power draw capped at 3 watts. This raises questions regarding the cost-effectiveness of the AI HAT+ 2, as the additional 8GB of RAM may not justify its $130 price tag, especially when compared to upgrading to the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 model, which provides greater flexibility and performance for running multiple models efficiently.

Looking ahead, Raspberry Pi has announced plans to release more extensive AI models soon after the AI HAT+ 2 launch. These forthcoming models are expected to enhance the capabilities of the add-on board, further broadening its utility for generative AI tasks. In contrast, the original AI HAT+, priced at $70, remains focused on AI image processing, appealing to cost-conscious users seeking budget-friendly solutions.

As the demand for generative AI technologies continues to grow, Raspberry Pi’s latest offering positions itself in a competitive landscape. The balance between performance and power consumption remains a key focus, particularly as users explore applications that leverage both the computational power of the Raspberry Pi ecosystem and the innovative advancements in AI processing. The AI HAT+ 2 represents a significant step toward integrating powerful AI capabilities into accessible hardware, signaling a noteworthy shift in how users will engage with generative AI technologies in the future.
