Abu Dhabi is making significant strides in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape with the introduction of Falcon Perception, a multimodal model designed to enable machines to efficiently see, read, and interpret the physical world. Developed by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research arm of the emirate’s Advanced Technology Research Council, Falcon Perception represents a substantial expansion of the UAE’s AI ecosystem by integrating vision and language capabilities.
As competition in the global AI arena intensifies, the UAE seeks to position itself among nations capable of deploying advanced multimodal systems at scale. With approximately 600 million parameters, Falcon Perception is notably more compact compared to many leading multimodal models that typically contain several billion parameters. “Our goal with Falcon Perception was to challenge the prevailing assumption that vision systems must rely on complex multi-stage architectures,” said Hakim Hacid, chief researcher at TII’s Artificial Intelligence and Digital Research Centre. “By demonstrating that a single dense transformer can handle perception tasks efficiently, we are opening the door to a new generation of scalable multimodal systems.”
This innovative approach illustrates a broader trend in AI research that focuses on optimizing model design rather than merely increasing parameter counts or computational requirements. A flagship achievement of this initiative is Falcon, the UAE’s homegrown large language model (LLM), which was first launched by TII in 2023. Falcon quickly captured international interest due to its performance and the decision to release it as an open-source model, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s commitment to the idea that openness and governance can coexist.
