Tech giant Meta is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence version of its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, designed to interact with employees on his behalf. The AI-powered 3D character is being trained on Zuckerberg’s mannerisms, tone, public statements, and thoughts on company strategy, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The initiative aims to foster a sense of connection between employees and the CEO, as the AI will converse and provide feedback to staff. This trend is not isolated; other leaders have already embraced similar technologies. For instance, Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski uses an AI avatar to present quarterly financial updates and engage with both staff and customers. Similarly, Zoom CEO Eric Yuan deployed an AI version of himself for delivering opening remarks during earnings meetings.
Brian O’Mahony, head of Roffey Park Europe, commented on the rationale behind such developments, noting that leaders of large organizations often struggle with accessibility to thousands of employees. However, O’Mahony cautioned that what employees truly seek from leadership is authenticity and responsiveness, rather than merely an increase in communication volume. “These are qualities that cannot be coded,” he added.
Legal and ethical concerns surrounding AI avatars are also being raised. Anjali Malik, an associate at Bellevue Law, asserted that while an AI CEO avatar could theoretically enhance leadership presence in large organizations, it also poses risks. She emphasized that trust is difficult to establish if employees feel they are interacting with a curated version of leadership, particularly in situations involving feedback or difficult conversations. “That can undermine authenticity rather than enhance it,” she explained.
Malik highlighted additional legal risks for employers, noting that employees might rely on guidance from an AI that appears to speak for the CEO, raising questions of accountability if such advice is flawed or discriminatory. Data protection is also a concern, as employees may share sensitive information without clear guidelines on how it will be stored or used.
Separately, Zuckerberg is reportedly building a ‘CEO agent’ to assist him with internal tasks, including retrieving company information more efficiently, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. This move aligns with Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure.
In 2021, Meta launched a metaverse working platform called Horizon Workrooms, designed to facilitate collaboration among remote workers. Zuckerberg created an avatar of himself within this metaverse, though it faced criticism for its subpar graphic quality. The platform was ultimately shut down earlier this year as the company shifted its focus toward AI development.
The timing of Meta’s AI initiatives raises questions, particularly as the company is reportedly planning layoffs that could affect up to 20% of its workforce. Melissa Carr, a lecturer in international HR management at Henley Business School, expressed concern over the effectiveness of a digital stand-in at a time when employees are anxious about job security. “What they need from leadership is human presence, not a digital stand-in,” she stated.
As Meta forges ahead with its AI strategy, the broader implications of digitally replicating leadership remain to be fully understood. The pressing question is not just whether technology can replicate a leader’s tone and thinking, but whether employees will feel genuinely listened to and engaged in a dialogue with an AI. This development may redefine the dynamics between leadership and staff in an era increasingly marked by digital transformation.
