SK Chairman Chey Tae-won Discusses AI Collaborations with Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won forges strategic AI partnerships with Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Google to enhance SK hynix’s role in global AI infrastructure

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won held discussions with leaders from major U.S. technology firms, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Google, to enhance collaboration in the growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector. The meetings, which took place over the past week, were aimed at bolstering SK hynix’s strategic partnerships and expanding its role within the global AI ecosystem.

During a meeting last Thursday in Silicon Valley, Chey met with Nvidia’s Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang to explore potential collaborations in AI. SK hynix stated that their partnership, which began in the initial phases of high bandwidth memory (HBM) development, has matured into a strategic relationship that now encompasses joint product planning, going beyond mere supply agreements. The chipmaker aims to broaden its cooperation with Nvidia to include not only AI chips but also a wider AI infrastructure.

On Tuesday, Chey met with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in Seattle, where discussions focused on cooperation in high bandwidth memory, AI data centers, and various AI solutions. This meeting reflects SK Group’s intention to strengthen its position in the AI landscape and enhance collaboration with Microsoft beyond semiconductor supply chains to encompass AI infrastructure and services.

Also on Tuesday, Chey engaged with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in San Jose to talk about a long-term memory supply agreement. Given SK hynix’s role as a key supplier of enterprise SSDs and server DRAM for Meta’s data centers, this partnership is expected to be pivotal in meeting the growing demands of AI technologies.

On Wednesday, Chey met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai to discuss memory chip supply and explore potential investment opportunities. The discussions were part of SK hynix’s broader strategy to align its technological capabilities with the needs of these industry giants.

In a statement, SK hynix noted that the meetings with these global tech leaders are not only aimed at enhancing business cooperation but also serve as a catalyst for the advancement of Korea’s AI industry. As competition intensifies in the AI sector, SK Group’s initiatives are indicative of a strategic pivot towards a more integrated approach to technology development.

Analysts suggest that these collaborations could position SK hynix as a key player in the development of next-generation AI infrastructure and services. The company’s focus on expanding its partnerships indicates a recognition of the rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology and its critical importance in future market dynamics.

As the demand for advanced AI applications continues to surge, the outcomes of these meetings may significantly contribute to reshaping the competitive landscape within the semiconductor and AI sectors, not only in Korea but globally.
