Alibaba Cloud Raises Prices Up to 34% Citing AI Demand and Supply Chain Costs

Alibaba Cloud raises service prices by up to 34% due to surging AI demand and rising supply chain costs, affecting numerous instances and hardware.

Alibaba Cloud announced today that it will raise prices for many of its services by as much as 34 percent, citing increased global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and rising supply chain costs as key factors behind the decision. The price adjustment notice, released on Wednesday, detailed a significant surge in procurement costs for core hardware across the industry. “After careful evaluation, we have decided to adjust the prices of services,” the notice stated.

The updated pricing lists indicate that dozens of services and instance types will see a price increase of five percent. However, the cost of high-end instances utilizing graphics processing units (GPUs) will experience a more substantial rise, ranging from 25 to 34 percent. Instances that run on Alibaba’s proprietary software, including the PolarDB cloud-native database, are also affected by these changes.

Furthermore, prices for using accelerators in the Chinese cloud will increase by five to 30 percent. This includes the cost associated with Alibaba’s own Pingtouge Zhenwu 810E, a parallel-processing ASIC designed for AI applications, which is touted to be competitive with Nvidia’s modified H20 GPU targeted for the Chinese market.

In a more positive note for current users, Alibaba stated that customers who purchased relevant services before April 18, 2026, “will not be affected by this adjustment in your current order/billing cycle; the new price will apply at the start of your next renewal cycle.” This provides a temporary reprieve for many clients, as Alibaba Cloud allows subscriptions for its services in one-or two-year terms and increments of three, six, and nine months.

While the price hikes may be seen as a rational response to escalating memory prices and unavoidable cost increases, some analysts suggest that the move could also appear opportunistic. Just last November, Alibaba Cloud claimed it could not install servers quickly enough to meet demand and was rationing access to GPUs for higher-paying customers. This raises questions about the necessity of such significant price increases in light of the company’s previous assertions regarding its operational efficiency compared to competing cloud services.

Alibaba Cloud is not alone in implementing pricing changes. AWS, for example, announced a 15 percent price hike on certain machine-learning-centric resources earlier this year, indicating a broader trend among major cloud providers responding to market pressures.

This latest announcement from Alibaba Cloud underscores the challenges and opportunities present in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, as companies navigate the dual pressures of soaring demand and rising operational costs. Looking ahead, the tech community will be observing how these changes impact customer sentiment and market dynamics in the cloud industry.
