OpenAI has initiated briefings for both state and federal government officials regarding its new cybersecurity product, according to reports. The AI startup showcased its latest model, GPT-5.4-Cyber, during an event in Washington D.C. on April 21, as detailed by Axios.
Attendees at the event included a range of officials from various government agencies and national security sectors, primarily those responsible for day-to-day cybersecurity operations. This outreach is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to enhance cybersecurity through advanced AI technology.
In addition to federal efforts, OpenAI is collaborating with state governments to facilitate access to the GPT-5.4-Cyber model. The company is also beginning to brief the Five Eyes alliance, a multi-national intelligence-sharing partnership that includes the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. This dual-track approach aims to distribute a more widely available version of the model, equipped with robust safeguards, while also providing a more permissive version for cyber defenders through its Trusted Access program.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, emphasized that this strategy will enable a range of organizations, such as local water utilities, to access advanced AI tools, thereby enhancing their cybersecurity capabilities. OpenAI’s efforts aim to prioritize critical applications and facilitate the sharing of threat intelligence across different sectors.
Sasha Baker, who leads the company’s national security policy, expressed hopes for collaboration with government departments to identify and focus on the most pressing cybersecurity needs. This initiative comes shortly after OpenAI’s competitor, Anthropic, began previewing its own cybersecurity model, Mythos. Anthropic has opted for a limited release, providing access to about 40 companies and organizations, including some governmental entities, while citing safety concerns about a wider rollout.
On the same day as OpenAI’s briefing, Anthropic announced an investigation into reports of unauthorized access to Mythos through a third-party vendor. The company stated it had found no evidence that this compromise extended beyond that vendor. Meanwhile, the U.K. Government’s AI Security Institute (AISI) recently evaluated Mythos, concluding that while AI systems are not yet capable of executing flawless cyberattacks, their potential for planning and executing multistage intrusions is evolving.
The AISI report highlighted that, despite the limited success rates of current AI-driven cyberattacks, improvements in computational power, orchestration, and integration with external tools will likely enhance these capabilities over time. The findings suggest that even inconsistent execution of cyber strategies represents a foundation that could be built upon, increasing risks as the technology matures.
As OpenAI and Anthropic navigate the complexities of AI in cybersecurity, the implications for national security and industry standards are becoming increasingly clear. The integration of advanced AI tools into cybersecurity operations presents both opportunities and challenges, necessitating responsible deployment and collaboration among government bodies to mitigate risks. As AI technology continues to advance, the focus will likely shift to how these tools can be effectively utilized to enhance security protocols and respond to emerging threats.
