OpenAI Integrates Sora AI Video Generator Into ChatGPT, Expanding Multimodal Capabilities

OpenAI integrates its AI video generator Sora into ChatGPT, enhancing its capabilities and responding to user demand amid rising competition in the AI content market.

OpenAI is set to integrate its AI video generator, Sora, into ChatGPT, according to a report from The Information, which cites sources familiar with the plans. This initiative marks a significant stride in OpenAI’s commitment to developing multimodal artificial intelligence technologies, positioning Sora as a competitor to existing text-to-video tools from major players such as Meta and Google. The addition of AI-generated video to ChatGPT could significantly enhance its functionality beyond text and image outputs.

Sora was launched as a standalone application in September 2025, enabling users to create and share AI-generated videos, including clips derived from copyrighted materials, in a format reminiscent of social media feeds. Despite the forthcoming integration with ChatGPT, OpenAI intends to maintain Sora as a separate application, preserving its unique features and user experience.

The move comes amidst a broader industry trend towards enhancing AI capabilities for visual media generation. While text-based AI models have already found extensive applications across various sectors, the expansion into video and image creation is seen as the next logical evolution of the technology. OpenAI has been actively exploring monetization strategies for Sora, evident in its November announcement of a pricing model that allows users to purchase 10 additional video generations for $4, while still providing a daily limit of 30 free videos.

Bill Peebles, head of Sora, noted in a post on X that the introduction of the paid feature was driven by user demand that had “exceeded expectations,” alongside recognition that current usage levels were “completely unsustainable.” This initiative is also part of efforts to forge a larger “Sora economy,” aimed at enabling creators and rights holders to monetize their content effectively on the platform. Peebles added that while Pro users are currently permitted to generate up to 100 videos each day, these limits may be adjusted based on the computational resources necessary for video generation.

The report arrives at a time when OpenAI is facing scrutiny regarding user retention for ChatGPT in light of a recent contract with the Pentagon. Reports indicate that the chatbot has lost millions of users following this agreement, which allows the Pentagon to utilize OpenAI’s AI model within its classified network. A website tracking the ensuing boycott campaign claims that over 2.5 million individuals have pledged to abandon the chatbot service due to the contract, with figures derived from website signatures, social media engagements, and credible mobile app usage data.

The increasing competition from Google’s Gemini and similar tools has only heightened concerns over ChatGPT’s user base. As the demand for AI-generated content grows, the integration of video capabilities may offer OpenAI a strategic advantage in a rapidly evolving market. Looking ahead, the merging of capabilities between ChatGPT and Sora could redefine user interactions with AI, creating new opportunities for engagement and content creation in the realm of artificial intelligence.
