Jeff Bezos Launches AI Startup Project Prometheus with $6.2 Billion in Funding

Jeff Bezos launches AI startup Project Prometheus with $6.2 billion in funding, targeting innovations in physical tasks across engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence startup named Project Prometheus, which has already secured an impressive $6.2 billion in initial funding. This move marks Bezos’s first operational role at a company since he stepped down as CEO of Amazon in July 2021, as he will serve as co-CEO of the venture.

According to The New York Times, a portion of the funding is contributed by Bezos himself. The substantial financial backing positions Project Prometheus as one of the most well-funded early-stage startups globally, highlighting the growing interest in cutting-edge AI technologies.

Bezos’s renewed involvement in the tech industry comes as he has also deepened his engagement with Blue Origin, his space exploration company that competes with Elon Musk‘s SpaceX. It appears that Project Prometheus aligns with Bezos’s ambitions in both space and AI, aiming to advance technological capabilities across various fields.

Focus on Physical Tasks

Project Prometheus plans to concentrate on developing AI technologies that enhance physical tasks, particularly in sectors like engineering and manufacturing. Specific industries targeted include computers, aerospace, and automobiles. By harnessing AI to optimize these areas, the startup aims to drive innovation and efficiency.

Joining Bezos at the helm is Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist with considerable experience in the tech space. Bajaj co-founded Verily, a research lab under Alphabet, and has worked at Google X, where he participated in pioneering projects such as drone delivery services and autonomous vehicles, which eventually evolved into Waymo.

Bajaj previously served as CEO of Foresite Labs, an incubator specializing in AI and data science startups, and his extensive background in the field positions him well to co-lead Project Prometheus. Together, he and Bezos have assembled a team of nearly 100 employees, comprising researchers drawn from leading AI firms like OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta.

The launch of Project Prometheus signifies not only Bezos’s return to the tech forefront but also the escalating competition in the AI landscape. As companies increasingly leverage artificial intelligence to gain a competitive edge, the implications for industries ranging from manufacturing to aerospace could be profound. The expertise that Bajaj brings, combined with the substantial funding, positions Project Prometheus to potentially reshape the way AI is integrated into physical tasks.

In summary, Project Prometheus represents a significant new player in the AI domain, with the potential to impact multiple sectors through innovative applications of technology. As advancements continue, the global AI community will be watching closely to see how this venture develops under the stewardship of Bezos and Bajaj.
