Google Launches First AI Lab in Mexico’s Puebla, Set to Open January 2026

Google will open its first AI lab in Puebla, Mexico, in January 2026, aimed at advancing applied AI tools and fostering local technological growth.

Google has confirmed plans to establish its first artificial intelligence (AI) lab in Mexico, set to open in January 2026. The announcement was made by Celina Peña Guzmán, the Science and Technology Minister of Puebla state, during a recent Tech Capital Summit.

During the summit, Google Cloud’s Commercial Manager, Manuel Tierno, endorsed the project. However, he did not disclose specific details about the lab’s location or its financial investment, which remain undisclosed.

The forthcoming lab will focus on developing and demonstrating applied AI tools, with the intention of utilizing innovations from Google Labs. These AI Labs serve as key centers for research and testing, aimed at pushing the boundaries of AI technology.

According to Peña Guzmán, the lab is projected to be built within the federal government’s 400-hectare Development Hub for Wellbeing, also known as Ciudad Modelo, located in the municipality of San José Chiapa. This strategic location is designed to foster technological advancement and efficiency within the region.

Peña Guzmán expressed optimism about the project, claiming it represents a chance to streamline bureaucratic processes and enhance technological security for local citizens. “These strategic alliances support young people and transform government processes,” she stated in a press release in July.

In addition to the lab, a significant investment is being made in infrastructure to support the burgeoning tech sector in the area. A new electricity substation, costing approximately 600 million pesos (around $32.8 million), is being constructed, located about 65 km from Puebla city. This facility is expected to be operational by February 2026 and will supply 60 megawatt-hours of power to support both domestic and international businesses entering the region.

Puebla has recently been designated as the “Capital of Technology and Sustainability,” a title reflecting its growing appeal to tech companies. In light of this designation, various tech giants, including Amazon, Oracle, and Huawei, are collaborating with the state’s Education Ministry to enhance internal processes and develop applied tools for students.

This initiative signifies not only a major investment in local infrastructure but also underscores a broader trend of technological investment in Mexico, positioning the country as an emerging hub for innovation and AI development.

As Google launches this AI lab, it is expected to catalyze significant advancements in technology frameworks and create new opportunities for collaboration, specifically aimed at benefiting the local community and enhancing governmental efficiency.
