Meta Platforms’ new artificial intelligence lab, known as Superintelligence Labs, has unveiled its first high-profile AI models this month, according to CTO Andrew Bosworth. Speaking at a press briefing during the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Bosworth noted that the team, which was established last year, has been making significant progress in its AI endeavors.
“They’re basically six months into the work, not quite even,” Bosworth remarked, describing the team’s AI models as “very good.” While he did not disclose the specific models that have been delivered internally, media reports from December mentioned ongoing development of a text AI model codenamed “Avocado” and an image- and video-focused model referred to as “Mango,” both expected to launch in the first quarter of this year.
Meta’s strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence comes amid mounting competition in the tech landscape, particularly from rivals such as Alphabet’s Google, which have gained substantial momentum in developing transformative AI technologies. Under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company has made efforts to revamp its AI leadership and attract top talent with competitive offers, aiming to secure a leading position in this rapidly evolving sector.
Despite optimism from Bosworth, Meta has faced criticism related to the performance of its earlier AI model, Llama 4. The CTO acknowledged that the current technology is still in development, emphasizing the extensive work required post-training to make AI models usable both internally and for consumers. “There’s a tremendous amount of work to do post-training,” he stated, indicating that considerable effort is still needed to refine the models for practical applications.
Looking ahead, Bosworth expressed confidence that the company would begin to see favorable returns from its investments by 2025, which he described as a “tremendously chaotic year” for Meta as it built out its AI lab and supporting infrastructure. He anticipates that consumer AI trends will solidify in 2026 and 2027, noting that recent advancements have led to models capable of handling everyday queries that families typically engage with. Bosworth emphasized the significance of the next two years for bringing robust consumer products to market.
In addition to its AI initiatives, Meta is currently marketing AI-equipped Ray-Ban Display glasses, though the company recently paused their international expansion to prioritize fulfilling domestic orders in the United States. The firm’s focus on enhancing its product offerings through AI integration reflects a broader industry trend where technology companies are racing to leverage artificial intelligence for competitive advantage.
