Apple Transforms Siri into AI Chatbot ‘Campos,’ Enhancing User Interaction and Privacy

Apple is set to launch a revamped Siri, dubbed "Campos," as a conversational AI assistant in September, enhancing user interactions and privacy while integrating deeply with its ecosystem.

Apple is set to revolutionize how users interact with their devices by developing a significant upgrade to Siri, transforming it into a full conversational AI assistant. This new iteration, internally referred to as “Campos,” aims to position Apple directly within the rapidly expanding chatbot market, where competitors like OpenAI and Google currently lead. The updated Siri is expected to be introduced later this year, allowing for more natural and fluid conversations, a transition from the traditional voice assistant model.

The forthcoming version of Siri will allow users to engage in meaningful dialogue, understanding context and managing complex requests. Users will activate Siri in the same manner as before—by speaking “Siri” or pressing the side button—but the interaction will feel significantly more intuitive. Sources familiar with the development have indicated to Bloomberg that this chatbot initiative is distinct from the upcoming Siri update slated for release with iOS 26.4, which will retain the current interface while introducing features like enhanced web searches and reading on-screen content.

This ambitious project aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to bolster its reputation in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly following the lukewarm reception of its Apple Intelligence introduced in 2024. Investors responded positively to news of the chatbot enhancements, as reflected in a rise in Apple’s stock price post-announcement. The new Siri is anticipated to be showcased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a public rollout expected around September as a key feature in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

Although engineers have been testing a standalone Siri app that resembles ChatGPT or Gemini, Apple does not intend to release it independently. Instead, Siri will be embedded within the operating system, accessible across various applications and settings, maintaining its current integration model. For years, Apple refrained from launching a dedicated chatbot, believing users preferred tools that operate discreetly in the background. However, increasing pressure from competitors like Samsung and several Chinese manufacturers, who have already incorporated conversational AI features, has prompted Apple to act.

The revamped Siri is designed to perform a multitude of tasks, including searching the web, drafting text, generating images, summarizing documents, and analyzing uploaded files. With user consent, the AI will leverage personal data to expedite searches for messages, calendar events, music, and files. Notably, unlike many third-party chatbots, the new Siri will have the capability to recognize open applications and content on the screen, enabling actions like adjusting settings, launching apps, making calls, or initiating the camera.

Apple plans to integrate Siri closely with its suite of applications, including Mail, Photos, Music, Podcasts, TV, and Xcode. For instance, users could instruct Siri to locate a photo by its content and subsequently edit it through voice commands, or seek assistance in composing an email using details from upcoming calendar events. However, privacy continues to be a paramount concern within Apple. While many chatbots personalize responses by recalling past interactions, Apple is contemplating stringent limitations on Siri’s memory capabilities to address these privacy issues.

As Apple gears up to redefine its virtual assistant, the implications extend beyond merely enhancing user experience. The advancement of Siri could signify a broader commitment by Apple to establish its foothold in AI technology, an area where it has faced increasing scrutiny and competition. The forthcoming developments not only represent a shift in Apple’s approach but may also influence how other tech companies evolve their own AI solutions in an increasingly crowded market.
