ChatGPT Saves Users Up to 15% on Shopping Compared to Perplexity in Price Hunt

ChatGPT outperformed Perplexity in a shopping trial, saving users up to 15% and facilitating purchases like a PS5 controller for $89.99 and sneakers at $73.

In a quest to save money while indulging in hobbies, a tech enthusiast turned to AI chatbots for assistance in finding the best deals on items sitting in an Amazon wishlist. With a penchant for video games, comic books, and sneakers, the user decided to experiment with two prominent AI tools—ChatGPT and Perplexity—to determine which could deliver smarter shopping options.

The first item tested was the Astro Bot PS5 DualSense Controller, specifically the “Joyful Edition.” The user sought a new unit without the anxiety of overspending. ChatGPT provided extensive information, including new and resale options, pricing trends, and direct links to retailers like GameStop and eBay, effectively acting as a comprehensive shopping guide. In contrast, Perplexity offered a solid overview but lacked the depth and user-friendly format that ChatGPT provided. Ultimately, the user purchased the controller from GameStop at a competitive price of $89.99, or $85.49 for Pro members, aided significantly by ChatGPT’s recommendations.

Next, the search shifted to a kitchen appliance: an air fryer. As this gadget has become a household staple, the user had decided it was time to join the trend. ChatGPT once again rose to the occasion, presenting a curated list segmented by price tiers, along with practical advice on features and sales. Meanwhile, Perplexity emphasized expert-backed recommendations, offering a method to compare prices across various retailers. In this round, Perplexity emerged victorious as it tailored suggestions based on the user’s budget and cooking needs, leading to the selection of the Cosori TurboBlaze for $89.99.

The final item in this deal-hunting experiment was the Nike Men’s Air Force 1 ’07 sneaker. ChatGPT excelled in this category as well, providing a detailed analysis of pricing across various platforms like eBay and Foot Locker, complete with visual aids and clarity regarding size and condition. Perplexity introduced the user to lesser-known sneaker retailers but fell short in specific information regarding the user’s requested parameters. Consequently, the user secured a new pair of sneakers for $73, again thanks to ChatGPT’s thoroughness.

Overall, ChatGPT emerged as the dominant tool in this shopping experiment, offering a practical approach to price comparison and deal-hunting that resonated well with the user. Although Perplexity provided valuable insight and a structured method for selecting items, it was ChatGPT’s ability to furnish detailed listings, direct links, and an intuitive interface that solidified its reputation as the preferred choice for budget-conscious shopping. As consumers increasingly turn to AI for assistance in navigating complex purchasing decisions, this experiment highlights the potential of AI chatbots in making more informed and cost-effective choices.
