The New Jersey Artificial Intelligence Hub is poised for expansion through a partnership with Plug and Play, a global innovation platform. This collaboration, announced by Princeton University last December, will see Plug and Play operate the AI Hub’s AI Accelerator, officially launching in March.
The AI Hub is a state-backed initiative aimed at establishing New Jersey as a leader in AI research, innovation, education, and development. Alongside Princeton, founding partners include Microsoft and CoreWeave, an AI cloud-computing company.
The AI Accelerator is designed to accelerate the growth of both local and global AI startups through Plug and Play’s extensive network. With more than 60 international locations, Plug and Play positions itself as a bridge between Silicon Valley and the rest of the world, making innovation accessible to a broader audience.
This initiative employs a dual strategy: connecting New Jersey companies with global partners and attracting elite startups to the state, leveraging Princeton’s rich research and innovation landscape. Saeed Amidi, founder and CEO of Plug and Play, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that New Jersey’s top-tier research institutions and talent base provide a strong foundation for making the state a global leader in AI.
In a recent interview, Liat Krawczyk, Executive Director of the NJ AI Hub, indicated that up to 20 companies would be selected for the Accelerator’s inaugural cohort. “Plug and Play has received numerous applications from diverse entrepreneurs at various stages of their journeys,” she noted.
The Accelerator’s core mission includes educating entrepreneurs on effectively utilizing AI to tackle current challenges. Krawczyk emphasized the importance of instilling ethical considerations in development, stating, “We want to ensure that developers have a foundational understanding of how to incorporate an ethical viewpoint into what they’re building.”
Krawczyk elaborated on plans to cultivate a pipeline of companies that would contribute to long-term economic growth in New Jersey. “We want to be the home where we’re accelerating breakthrough research and strengthening sector-specific AI ecosystems locally,” she added.
To support local enterprises, Krawczyk highlighted Plug and Play’s robust ecosystem, which has engaged with over 100,000 startups across 25 countries and partnered with over 500 corporations. This broad reach will provide New Jersey companies with access to numerous clients and potential partners worldwide.
Jennifer Rexford, Provost of Princeton University, outlined the university’s role in the AI Accelerator, stating that the collaboration with Plug and Play will stimulate AI innovation and create opportunities for faculty and students to transform novel ideas into successful products and companies. Krawczyk also mentioned that students would have various opportunities to engage, although specific details are still being developed.
The partnership between the New Jersey Artificial Intelligence Hub and Plug and Play underscores the state’s ambition to become a central player in the burgeoning AI sector. By enhancing connections between local and global entities and fostering an environment of ethical innovation, New Jersey aims to shape the future landscape of artificial intelligence.
