Google Photos Launches Text Prompt Feature for Enhanced Image-to-Video Creation

Google Photos enhances its image-to-video tool, adding text prompts for users 18 and older to customize animations, boosting creative control and personalization.

Google is enhancing its Google Photos application by granting users greater control over the app’s generative AI photo-to-video feature. In an update announced on Monday, Google Photos now supports text prompts for video generation, allowing users to articulate specific movements, styles, or effects they wish to incorporate when animating their still images.

This new capability supplements the existing “Subtle Movement” and “I’m feeling lucky” options within Google Photos’ image-to-video tool, both of which previously restricted users from inputting their own descriptions to influence the output. Google has indicated that Photos will offer prompt suggestions “for instant video inspiration,” while users will also have the ability to modify text prompts to refine the resulting video generations.

However, the text prompt feature is limited to users aged 18 and older. This age restriction applies only to Google’s image-to-video tool in Photos; in contrast, text prompts have been available in the Gemini platform for a broader audience, with an age requirement of 13 years or older. The introduction of descriptive prompts aligns Photos’ image-to-video tool more closely with competing AI editors, such as xAI’s Grok, which has faced scrutiny for its potential misuse.

Generative AI features within Google Photos are not yet universally accessible, and functionality may vary by region. For those interested, Google’s support page provides detailed information on current restrictions regarding availability.

In addition to the new text prompt feature, Google Photos users can now include audio by default in every video created using the image-to-video functionality. This enhancement ensures that videos are ready for publication online without requiring further editing. Another recent update introduced a Google Photos picker for Gmail, simplifying the process of sharing images and videos from user albums and collections via email. This feature allows for the selection of multiple photos and videos at once, along with a search function for specific photos and album names.

As generative AI technology continues to evolve, Google’s latest updates reflect its commitment to enhancing user experience and creative expression. The integration of text prompts and streamlined sharing options highlights a significant shift towards more personalized and accessible tools for photo and video editing. As users navigate these new capabilities, they may find that the intersection of technology and creativity presents new avenues for storytelling and memory preservation.
