Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc., unveiled a significant initiative on Wednesday aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) connectivity between India and the United States. Speaking at a Google event in New Delhi, Pichai announced the launch of the India-America Connect Initiative, which will invest in new undersea cable routes and digital infrastructure.
The initiative aims to establish new subsea cable connections linking India with the United States and various locations across the southern hemisphere. Pichai emphasized that this move is designed to cater to the growing demand for AI infrastructure, facilitating faster data flows and more reliable global connectivity.

Alongside infrastructure and research announcements, Google introduced its most ambitious skilling initiative in India to date, launching a new AI Professional Certificate program. Pichai stressed that investments in connectivity and research must be complemented by investments in human capital, asserting that widespread skilling will be crucial to ensure that AI’s benefits are distributed across various sectors and regions. Indian users have consistently ranked among the world’s highest in adopting voice and visual search technologies. Pichai noted that Google’s Gemini AI platform is experiencing robust growth within the country, reflecting the increasing engagement with AI-driven tools.
Additionally, Pichai pointed out Google’s broader investment strategy in India, which includes plans for establishing an AI hub in Visakhapatnam and ongoing efforts to implement AI solutions in key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and public services.
Earlier in the day, Pichai met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the nation’s AI ambitions and the potential for collaboration with Google to support students, professionals, and national digital agendas.
