New Delhi: The Indian government has issued a warning to attendees of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 regarding a phishing scam targeting them. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) alerted the public through a social media post, indicating that fraudulent messages are being disseminated via SMS and WhatsApp, seeking sensitive information under the guise of facilitating refunds. These communications have not been authorized by the organization overseeing the event.
The Union Ministry specifically urged all participants to exercise caution against unsolicited requests for personal data, including card numbers and WhatsApp contact details. Attendees were also advised to rely solely on official channels for any updates related to the summit.
The ministry’s post elaborated, “Please note: It has come to our attention that a phishing scam is currently targeting attendees of the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Fraudulent messages are being circulated via SMS and WhatsApp, requesting sensitive information to facilitate ‘refunds.’ These communications are not official and have not been authorized by our organization.”
This warning comes at a time when cybersecurity threats are increasingly prevalent, particularly in the context of large-scale conferences where personal information may be more vulnerable. The ministry emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging attendees to disregard any requests for information that seem suspicious.
If individuals have already shared their information through dubious links, the ministry recommends that they contact their banks immediately to secure their accounts. This proactive approach highlights the ongoing risks associated with digital fraud, especially as more events move online and utilize digital communication platforms that may be exploited by cybercriminals.
As the summit aims to explore the effects of artificial intelligence on various sectors, the potential for scams targeting attendees underscores the need for heightened awareness around digital security. The event, set to take place later this year, is expected to attract numerous industry leaders and experts, making it a prime target for malicious activities.
The broader implications of such scams extend beyond individual attendees, as they can undermine the credibility and security of major events like the AI Impact Summit. Organizers and participants alike must remain vigilant to protect their personal information while ensuring that discussions around AI can proceed without disruption from external threats.
